When my wife signed up with Sprint they told her that we were going to be getting wimax "soon" since we lived in a major area "about to be covered".

It has been a long time since then and she's no longer under contract or Sprint. We still do not have 4g/wimax coverage.

4g is obsolete. Sprint itself is moving to 4glte and the others are going to follow suit as soon as Verizon's grip on the spectrum ends. I do not think 4g is ever going to cover most of America or even all the metro areas.
