Default Wifi Tablet - Tethering Issues

Hi Guys.

I was wondering if anyone could help me with my problem. I have recently brought a new tablet (unbranded) which is running android 4.0.3 ICS.

I'm having problems getting my table to connect to the internet via the laptops ad-hoc network. From looking around, it seems that android devices do not recognise Ad-hoc networks, so is there anything I can do to over come this problem, without doing all this rooting etc?

My mobile phone (Vodafone 845) runs android 2.1, and I connect this to my laptop via USB to access the internet.

I did install connectify pro, and successfully set up a hotspot, my tablet connected right away, but it won't access the internet. The little signal bar in the right-hand bottom corner is grey and not blue which means no internet access from what I can make out, so I'm not sure what to try next.

Any ideas?

Thanks
