I can see holding off while you're still on warranty (although rooting gives you the ability to fix most software problems and if you run into a hardware issue you can almost always either unroot, or you're phone will be too borked for Verizon/HTC to know whether you were rooted or not). But you're warranty expired a year after you bought the phone.
