I can confirm that this is a hardware defect and not a firmware/radio issue. My wifi suddenly died after a week of owning the phone. After days of searching, found this : press firmly on the right side of the camera (screen facing you) and monitor the wifi strength. You'll see that it returns to its old self. There are loose contacts which should touch the back cover, and they don't. You could try and repair / clean and extend those yourself, or you could just return your One X and wait for the S3. Such hardware design defects are unacceptable!
