A VPN is a virtual private network.
Basically you connect to a remote network via an encrypted tunnel.
The idea behind this is that since the carriers cannot see what data is being transferred they have no idea what your doing.

IMHO, it's none of their business anyway.

There are quite a few of us that work in information systems or related occupations and rely on VPNs for day to day operations in and out of our offices.
Some companies need them to access intranets on mobile devices, for example.
