Sorry, I should mention I am using a HTC Hero. What device are you using?

If you are using an HTC phone, go to All Programs --> Mail. That should bring up HTC's mail app. Then Menu --> More --> Account list. What do you see there? If you see your gmail account, select it. Then go to Menu --> More --> Settings --> Send & Receive. There you can set the download frequency. You can choose Manual. That would only have the default gmail app checking your mail and thus showing one notification.

When you see the two notifications (@ and envelope), does clicking on each bring you to the same spot (like the gmail app)??
