Actually, the gmail app is probably set to push. That way you don't have to do anything. When you receive new mail in your inbox, you will automatically be notified via the @ symbol in the notification area.
To verify you have push turned on, open Settings (All Programs --> Settings). Then go to Data synchronization --> Google. Make sure Auto-sync is turned on. I also have Background data checked.
