Can you cast any light on this? Could it be related to the many repeated 'sync error' messages I find on Outlook, when syncing has partly failed (the bulk of the syncing still works perfectly).

I thnk it may be related to the recent changes (mentioned above) in the Hotmail servers. Since the problem occurs between the phone and the Hotmail servers, it probably has nothing to do with the Outlook errors. I don't know how to solve the problem, except possibly downloading the Hotmail app.
