Default VZ Stratosphere, ATT inbound & outbound e-mail issues

I don't see this issue listed previously; I'm hoping someone has advice. I bought my VZ Stratosphere phone in April. Periodically I have had problems sending and receiving e-mail on the phone from my ATT e-mail account. Yesterday I was not able to send (but receiving inbound messages). Took it the VZ store. Rep screwed it up worse; now I get a message stating that the e-mail account is already set up on the phone but when I look in the "Accounts and sync", it's not listed. I'm ready to spend the $$ on a phone that does not give me problems (like an I-phone) but want to try to fix this first. Does anybody have suggestions? Verizon support seems useless...thank you!
