I would suggest rooting and flashing a rom like CM7 (or CM9). When you flash rom's they should not affect the user storage partitions, but there's always the risk that files may be lost. There's really no way to know what's going on with your phone until you get it to boot up. As long as you can get into download mode, you should be able to flash it.

One of the other things to consider is that if you plan or replacing it, make sure AT&T knows you are doing this to recover your data and that it's okay with them if you return a rooted phone.
