Months ago.. When sprint was telling the public about their great plan for the future.. All data speeds would be better... Tower upgrades will boost every network on sprint
I can't speak for other markets, but as I have said before, here in wichita, KS I went from 150k average downloads to between 1000 and 1500k on 3g. Even in areas that still don't have great signal, I am getting 500k. I would say chances are good that Sprint isn't blowing smoke when they say 3g and 4g will benefit. My 3g service is actually usable now, which it wasn't really before the upgrades.

Okay, so I know I read we aren't supposed to be able to get 4G on this phone until LTE rolls out. [I live in a small town and never got 4G on the original Evo] Anyway, tonight I was outside smoking on my break at work and noticed that while I was playing around on facebook, my phone kept flipping between saying 3G and 4G at the top. So is it just confused?
Well my next question would be, will the old 4G Evo's be SOL? Or will they be able to pick up 4G after the switch?
Sprint has said that the "old 4G" (WiMax) will be supported until at least 2014, so you should be able to use it for at least another couple years, although no expansion will occur.. all 4G expansion from here on out will be 4G LTE.
I live in Southeast KS... I'm pretty sure we're not getting LTE before the bigger areas. Would be awesome! But I'm sure that's not what it is...
Well, we got LTE in Wichita, and someone on G+ recently posted pictures of the new tower equipment in Haysville, so it is definitely a possibility that you are getting LTE.
If anyone reads this thread and has a Galaxy S3, don't forget your phone will not have LTE unless you turn it on in your settings (which requires a reboot, which is ******ed).
I got some in Atlanta this weekend for the first time. Oddly enough though, I live on the edge of the coverage area (Braselton) and drive downtown to work and the only places I got 4g were actually downtown and in my neighborhood, nothing in between.
Speeds right now aren't much better than wimax though. However did pull some 1800-2000 download speeds on 3g as well. 3g is definitely peppier.
Here are a few video's some tower workers posted as they were installing Network Vision equipment on a Sprint tower in Florida today. Pretty cool stuff! osbaldo colunga - YouTube

Any updates on when the Austin area will get LTE? I had heard it would be this month...
The most recent schedule update at S4GRU.com shows Austin slipping into September. It could slip later than that. No test LTE signal has been reported in the wild in Austin, AFAIK.
My own speculation is that contractor resources that had been assigned to Austin were redeployed to Houston, DFW or San Antonio to fight the PR fires raging there after these markets were officially "launched" with very thin tower coverage.

Just got a Viper 4G LTE on Saturday. Sprint has not offically turned on LTE here in Wichita, KS yet. But I tried turning on my LTE on the phone and guess what? I had LTE!!! I ran a Speed Test to see how fast it was. I got 13.95 Mbps Down and 9.4 Mbps Up. And where I was according the Sensorly app was on the edge of a active LTE area. I can't wait till it gets OFFICALLY turned on. Of course, I'm getting a extended battery since LTE eats up your power fast. The area I picked up LTE was in the North Cental part of town along I-135.

Perhaps that happens on your Viper, but I read all the forums that focus on Sprint LTE (and even some that cover other carriers). I am unaware of any battery drain issues triggered by LTE connections. Users of the Sprint flagship phones (Galaxy S3 and EVO LTE) certainly are not reporting such an issue in general use.

If you have the original Evo 4G you will NEVER get LTE 4G on it. The 4G the Evo used is/was WiMax. Completely incompatible with LTE. You might be picking up a WiMax signal sporadically, hence the 3G/4G behavior.
And if so what did you do to get it? I read somewhere about an mseid update and a few people seeing it. Just curious.
Also post your speeds and such...

Anyone else here in the Portland / SW Washington area? Please let me know if anyone has any idea of when we can expect LTE.
I keep getting varying dates off of the popular blogs and Sprint's forums.
My S3 feels like a slug in this area...
I hope the dates of September for testing to begin are accurate. I don't think I can wait till end of 2013 for this phone to live up to its full potential.

While skimming through the threads over at S4GRU, I've seen several people say they have got got 4G LTE connections in and around Boston, MA. Most of them say they lose the connection after a couple days, which seems to be the norm as Sprint is upgrading and testing the sites. So, Based on that, I'd say Network Vision is actively being deployed in Boston.

I don't know for sure, but S4GRU has been pretty accurate in regards to the network upgrade schedule so far... here is a handy link, but unfortunately for you, it looks like Portland wont start till the end of the year and launch in mid 2013. Here in Oakland / SF Bay Area, California, I'm experiencing majorly pathetic speeds on our network, both 3G and Wimax. Over the weekend I was getting 29kbps down and 100kbps up in many places around Oakland, and in one place up in Vacaville. Wimax won't work at all sometimes in my apartment, where it used to work somewhat, if spotty.
Perhaps they are starting to do the towers in my area? I looked on the S4GRU website and I don't see any information about any Network Vision activity in my area.
If it's not Network Vision, then Sprint has reached a new low in service in the SF Bay Area. If it continues, they will lose customers, guaranteed. I could get better speeds with a dialup modem using Windows '95.
I've come to terms that if I stick with sprint I will never see 4g.. Or 4glte.. They don't even have plans to update south Jersey. I'm literally right outside of Atlantic City.. How does AC not get 4g lte? It didn't even get wimax! My poor phones will live their lives never to experience 4g

There really is not much substantive news there, except for Sprint marketers listing a bunch of cities -- large and small -- that already are being worked on in the relatively near term because Sprint wants to show some progress before launches. (The marketers may have shot themselves in the foot, because they seem just to have angered all the folks living in all the other cities falling later in the schedule that were not mentioned in the press release.)
But people who have followed the Sprint rollout closely -- mostly at S4GRU.com -- are not surprised by this "news," which is consistent with the projected timelines S4GRU has always published. The underlying fact is that the rollout, a total rebuild of Sprints entire network, is a huge project that will last into 2014, and some areas will be done before others. But the entire nationwide network will get LTE before the project is finished.
Hey Mr. Ed, Have you heard any rumblings or updates lately about HD Voice deploying. Anything that can be divulged? I know its still early , just curious is all, and definitely not complaining.
Its silly, because I won't be able to use it anyway (no other Evo LTE's or equivalt phones around me). I just want to find out more about it since it seems to have largely been forgotten or flown low key. We can surmise that alot of it hinges on the Network Vision deployment and continued progress, but they did initially say Fall/Winter or Q4 or something along those lines. It is kind of just around the corner.

Eventually could be a long time .. Good things come to those who wait so I will try to be patient ... And lte is a pretty big thing to be missing out on.. It is the phone's name after all.. And another huge miss would be HD voice. I'm really excited about that. With the LTEVO being the first HD voice compatible device that's pretty dang neat. I don't know why sprint doesn't get their s*** together .. It just gets frustrating. I had the OG.. The first 4g capable phone. And unfortunately I didn't even get wimax In my area. Not even to this day. So that was another disappointment. I have faith in sprint though. I'm hoping before I lay the ltevo to rest I get to enjoy 4g..So far none of my devices have even seen it.
I thought Sprint said it was looking like August, and now . . . who knows?
I called sprint back in June. They told me that my towers would be upgraded( 3g) on July 30th . It's now mid September and I haven't seen any improvement. I have tests to back that as well. I think sprint just tries to tell you what you want to hear. As a matter of fact I'm sure of it. Every time I call with an issue they tell me a tower is out. A tower is out. A tower is out. So one time I called sprint with my phone working perfect at my house where it's always 4-5 bars. (still horibbly slow but w/e) and I told them my service was crap, guess what they told me? You got it right... A tower is out in your area sir... Yes I lied, yes that was probably wrong. But I was conducting a test in the name of Science. Lol so that makes it ok.

I have the abIlIty to check outages
You never know...I know of two in my area that are constantly victim of theft/vandals
Someone asked about hd voice....I honestly have no idea. Concentration appears to be let and 3g backhaul.
I do see a number of "voice" upgrades appearing as well though
I keep saying it's worth the wait....but hard to convey it lol

So basically there's just no ETA on LTE in in LA? This is ridiculous, you think they'd want one of the biggest markets in the nation to have good LTE?

Who knows when it comes to sprint. I'm about 15 mins away from Atlantic City. You would think they would have some good coverage there as well.. But we didn't even get wimax.

It doesn't really bother me, until my cousin talks about how his 4g has been acting up a little...meaning he's actually been able to use it a lot.
Wimax was never that great, as far as coverage in l.a., so I want expecting much with the lte change, but from the overall network vision plan, I don't mind waiting around until the full rollout is complete. It's frustrating, but I'm hoping that the end product would be worth the wait

Sadly.. I've never gotten a 4g connection on any of my phones. Lol. Neither wimax or lte even when I went to New York I thought for sure my then 3vo would pick it up but nope.

Sometimes I'm jealous of friends on Verizon. Then I remember they're paying an evil company a crapload of money for those speeds, and I feel better. I'm just holding on to faith that Sprint will deliver on these upgrades, and that they'll release a nice new Nexus phone.

They don't really have any phones that I care for either. I'm not a big fan of Motorola. Not really a big fan of Samsung either. They have a couple HTC phones but none that really stick out to me. Luckily sprint gets the evo line that's really what keeps me on sprint. ( And the price!)
