Hi All. I have been reading all the
plethora of similar HTC Hero WiFi problems with interest.
Strangely enough, I am another person having problems.
I actually have the T-mobile version (G2-Touch).
When I first got it, it worked perfectly on WiFi (whilst awaiting the T-mobile account completion for service to be available).
I have a Netgear WPN824v2. I can confirm that everything else in the house connects perfectly to this including 4 laptops; on simple WAP 128b (I have to use WAP for the kids Nintendo DS's to connect)
Since my 3G account became fully operative, my WiFi got killed off (coincidence?)
The Hero continues to work Works a treat on 3G but very iffy and rarely on WiFi
I tried changing my router from auto 108Mb to just b/g and the wifi strated working very briefly (perhaps a minute) and then refused again.
Tonight I tried to assign a specific IP to my device by MAC address. I gave it 192.168.1.10
This worked for about 2 minutes and I managed to access Loot and Yahoo but then it stopped again.
It seems in fact that messing and
saving any changes to the router appears to kick start the proper connection and then it hangs again. I assume this actually includes a router reset to its connected devices?
I can also confirm, the Hero connects and confirms an excellent connection at 54Mb yet it will not allow browsing. It appears to fetch weather updates.
You know; it is all very well messing with the routers or even replacing them (as many appear to have done) but the whole idea is that the phone should connect with available WiFi networks. This does not seem to be such a problem for other manufacturers of devices. So many of you are blaming 802.11 protocols and certain routers, yet those same devices connect to just about everything else.
Face it, it's the Hero that has the problem!
I may just try to load up the latest ROM release and see if it helps any (sigh, back-up and restore

)
One other observation should it mean anything significant to anyone: My router can store devices by MAC address (as can most I believe) to deny access to unlitsed MAC's.
When I added the Hero's MAC, I gave it a name as I have done for all my devices.
The Hero loses its name when revisiting or refreshing the stored list - it just shows the MAC address with a dash in the 'device name' box.
Confused - ABSOLUTELY
