The latter is odd: I have *no* B-only clients, so had wanted to use G-only mode. But if I do that, the Hero often seems to have problems connecting. In mixed B+G mode, it's fine.

My Netgear is sending SSID and is running b&g only (in preference of auto 108Mb/s). No change.
I am still angry that the Hero's are unable to do what everything else I own can achieve with ease. Even the Xbox connects without a fuss.
I just got a reply back from HTC who has totally missed the point (despite the pointer to this thread)

Dear David, Thank you for your email. This is quite a common issue that you are having, it also has quite a simple way to fix it. 99% of people with this issue it turns out that it is not an issue with the phone. If you log on to your router through your pc then you change the settings on the router. There are 3 speed settings on your router, N, G and B. Our HTC devices are not made to work with G and B settings only. So just change the setting to one of those then your Hero will connect no problem. If there is anything else please do not hesitate to get in contact again. Kind regards HTC Technical Support Team.

They are clearly deluding themselves.
If everyone on here could similtaneously bombard their support by raising a ticket, perhaps they'd figure that people are getting really p!ssed off!
