You will need root access to install Google Play on the your phone. I finally found some helpful instructions on how to root the Lenovo a288t.

联想A288t,ROOT一次成功。好贴求顶!!!_联想a288t 蒧百度贴吧

Here the translation:

Step 1 - Download the zip archive from this website and extract its contents somewhere on your computer ???? - ??A288T ROOT ??

Step 2 - Turn off the phone and turn it back on in fastboot mode by holding the power button and the volume down button for about 10 seconds

Step 3 - connect the phone to your computer via usb

Step 4 - run root.bat from the extracted zip archive and wait until the dialogue box closes automatically (you might need to run this program as an administrator)

Step 5 - open up the back cover of your phone and take out the battery, put it back in and turn your phone on

Step 6 - go to your settings and reset your phone to factory settings (make sure you back up all your programs because this will erase everything). Wait for your phone to reboot.

You now have root privileges for your device. The first thing I did to install the google market was to reinstall the ESexplorer: One click file hosting: ES File Explorer v1.6.1.6.apk

In the explorer you need to go to settings and on the very bottom under "root settings" you'll need to check "root explorer" and "mount file system". Then download the Google Services Framework apk: GoogleServicesFramework.apk and install it.

Now download the Google Play app: Google Play Store - APK - Download - CHIP Handy Welt and install it. Launch the app, add your account et voil you have now a lenovo a288t with a fully working Play Store
