u can use uot for simple color changes or animations but anything else will require taking an image from another rom or using a image editing program
u can find some backgrounds on droidpirate.com. but they need to be resized to fit our screen 320 x 480. also u can resize ur own pictures or find one that is that size, or u can make one in UOT (a blank color or 50% transparency which lets u see ur homescreen thru the dropdown) and cut and paste a picture onto it.
the file ur looking for is "status_bar_background.png" in
framework-res.apk. but there is also a 9.png in systemUI.apk with the same name. I'm not sure if that also needs to be modified, I havent tried to change the background yet , but it is a 9.png which is more complicated to edit.
