Had I turned on my TV and had it on the HDMI input from the PC, I would have noticed, but it wasn't on and I couldn't for the life of me figure out why it would show the bootloader and even the windows 8 logo for a few seconds and then go blank. When it finally hit me I thought, "DUH!" and sure enough, that's what it was. Wasn't a failure by the installation process, just a failure of my common sense which caused me to end the install process.
