I just wanted to say that I also had these problems with HTC Hero's browser hanging when on my wifi network at home. I have a Thomson TG784 router. Restarting the Hero have helped before but only for a while and then it hung again.
Reading this thread for ideas I found someone changing the channel of the home network (from 1 to 3).
I did try this change last night and it seems to work so far! My Hero browser works as expected! Only one occurrence of the infamous "1 cm progess bar" hang and it was resolved by a simple repeated load attempt.
I don't know exactly why this helps. I could see - however - that channel 1 was busy with other traffic so perhaps the browser is over sensitive to competing networks... Sounds strange though...
