Bingo. It was NTFS.

Tried re-formatting a couple of drives using Fat32 (120 gigs) and ExFat (250 gigs) and they worked - no problem.

I also have a 1-TB drive formatted to ExFat and I *think* it connected/opened ok but wouldn't swear to it.
