MySpace wasn't there either
My guess is that Facebook is more personal. I don't usually add people I don't know. But things like Twitter it doesn't really matter, most people's goal on Twitter is to get as many followers as possible. Gtalk is there too if you like to talk to people/help others. That's my 2 cents.
