This is easily disabled:

sudo apt-get remove unity-lens-shopping
Besides, if you don't use 'Dash' you won't be affected anyway. (I haven't upgraded to 12.10 and honestly had no idea what this whole Amazon thing was about. Since Google is my friend, I did a quick search and found out. I don't use any of the file searching/indexing/whatever apps that come with *buntu, so it wouldn't affect me even if I had upgraded--when I search for files I do it at a command line. )

To the OP: I definitely recommend Ubuntu, specifically its Kubuntu version, which is Ubuntu with KDE as its desktop environment. I've used *buntu since its earliest days and love it.
