I've gotten several of those. Easiest way (in Windows) to determine the validity of the message - which is almost always unrealistic anyway - is to mouse-over the link and look at the destination in the lower left corner of the web page. It will show you where that link will take you, and it's almost always a really bad place. It'll either be a phishing site or, as Halon said, it'll be an executable download.

If you get a fake PayPal message advising you to "validate your account with the following link or it will be suspended", DON'T hit that link! Rather, forward the whole e-mail to spoof@paypal.com as they have an entire department set up to fight phishing.
