Not a dumb question and, for many, there is no reason too. It basically provides you with administrator control over your device. My most common usage for rooting is keeping backups of apps and data (using Titanium Backup or by manually backing up apks) as insurance against a bad update with undesired changes. Doesn't come up that often, but when it does it is greatly appreciated. Also I manage to screw up my data, I can restore the last good set of data.
I also like to have administrator privileges for my file manager, which means i can manipulate files anywhere. And yes, Ian elect to do something that will brick my device (like mistakenly delete a system file), but I never have. Still, I will fight for my right to do so.
