i used to use a root wifi tether app when i was on Virgin, yea, it violated their TOS but they never penalized me for it, the only drawback was that any device connecting to my phone via the hotspot only got a lousy 9600 bps bandwidth, barely usable for web browsing, no good at all for video or game play, forget downloads. heck on 3G i'd have 1.2Mbps down but my laptop, PS3, etc only .9Kbps. never did get why. i only used it when my internet dropped for whatever reason as a backup if i just HAD to browse the web or check email
