When you ice skate, the pressure of your weight causes the ice to melt, and you glide on a thin film of water that is constantly being melted at the front tip of the skate and re-frozen as it leaves the back tip - the outer edges are sharp but the bottom of the skate is slightly hollowed to trap and control the water.
