Yeah, it's amazing how much control telecommunication companies have. It's mostly due to a combination of lack of government regulation with the majority of customers complacent with how things are, and ignorant to how they actually operate.

For example, for my area Time Warner Cable has a 100% monopoly on cable and broadband internet . There are satellite tv companies, but they don't offer broadband.
