Default US Prices, what's the deal?

So, T-mobile announces $99 down, 20/mo for the One, no contract. Keep service with them or just pay off the phone. Sounds good. No activation fee, unlimited everything, tethering included. No LTE in L.A.

AT&T is to announce $250 for the One with a 2 yr contract. Plus activation fee, even for me as an existing customer, grandfathered into Unlimited, tethering is an add'l fee. Does have LTE in L.A.

I know that no contract and "paying off" the phone with no interest is almost the same as being in a contract, but I LOATHE contracts.

My iphone 4s is HSPA+, so I'm used to it. Hopefully LTE rolls out in L.A. soon.

I'm seeing the TMO deal as a better offer. I have to actually get a side-by-side of numbers to see what the end-cost will be though.
