In the US, cable companies have set top boxes that you plug the cable into and then transmit the video to your tv over HDMI or some other set of A/V cables. The set top box is programmable like a satellite box with a guide and parental controls. You can tell the box to not allow viewing of certain channels or any show above a rating you specify without a password.
