Default Notifications listed as ringtones

Hi. I wonder if anyone can help me with this?

Until a few days ago, custom ringtones & notifications were working fine. Then they started setting themselves to the default.

When I try to set a custom ringtone for a contact, I get these options:
-Default
-Current
-Ringtones>
-Music>

Here's the weird thing. The "Ringtones" list is actually a list of the stock notifications. Neither my ringtones nor the stock ones are in the list. Also the "default" and "current" are showing one of the notifications - but playing the default ringtone.

Tried using Airdroid, which can't see the problem. All my ringtones are there. My custom tones show up in Ringtones folder of the root directory.

There is a media folder, which had the structure:
-media
--audio
---notifications

and the only thing in it was the AnyDo notification tone (which seems to be in twice). There were no ringtones or alarms subfolders. I tried deleting the folder and rebooting. No joy - it just stopped the sound in AnyDo (as expected).

It looks like something is making the phone look for notifications instead of ringtones.

Any suggestions?

Galaxy S4 running Jelly Bean.

TIA
