I have to say that this is a big fuss about very little.

If you want your phone to fulfil its potential you have to root. If you have rooted, you can use foldermount and a 64GB SD card. Despite the dire warnings about how the world will come to an end if apps have to read their data from the SD card, I have been doing exactly this for more than two years and it has never caused me a problem.
