This is my guess. Now they can honestly say that you can move apps to sd, whether or not it solves the problem for those for whom it is a problem.
It has nothing to do with sales, it's already their fastest selling phone and I don't think anyone but shareholders gives a crap about them falling short of targets.
But to be fair, the shareholders are probably the only people whose opinions the management care about
