Hello barbz. Welcome to the forums.

The classic battery hogs in Android are auto syncing of various widgets and apps such as Gmail/email, Facebook and other social networking sites, weather and news, etc. I have mine all set to sync on demand, manually.. saves a lot of battery over the day.

Other things that impact resources are the location features such as the "standalone gps" and the carrier's location services, which you'll find in the main settings menu. Constant polling for location towers etc does drain the battery. It's best to use those only when needing directions or nearby services etc.
