For the gmail problem, I never used it, so maybe someone else can help you. EDIT: Well, I've now set up my Hotmail account to forward every message I receive to my gmail account, and syncing it seems to work just fine. I know it's gonna sound stupid, but are you sure you wrote the email and password correctly?
As for the switcher app, I missed it too, but then I discovered the Power Control Widget that is included, so I started using this instead, and I have to say I prefer it over Switcher.
