I was curious about that also because one of the s4's on display at Best Buy had really really bad burn in. Worst I've ever seen on any device. Granted, they have those phones on constantly, so I wasn't surprised.

Thing is, I think the purpose of it is to save battery life when just checking the time, while still having a little protection for the phone. I don't think saving time was really the benefit behind it. From the videos I've seen, it looks like a different screen from the actual lock screen, so it probably consumes less battery when going in and out of standby with the cover closed.

If I'm wrong and the clock status status on all the time, I'd likely pass
