Well it is a little more complex than that but only to make things easier for you. Homepipe does not set up a server on any of your computer which means no need to open up ports on routers or modify firewall rules. What it does is sets up a secure tunnel to there servers.

Have you ever heard of a pogoplug? Well it pretty much does the same thing as that but instead of purchasing hardware you run it on your pc or mac.
