If I follow DaSchmarotzer's tutorial....am I missing a step? Do I need to root the phone first?...I find lots of threads about both rooting and firmware upgrades but not much crossover to relate the two.
I have downloaded the software needed and what is talked about in the tutorial is straight forward enough for me to grasp but..........or am I just making this seem harder than it really is.
I have been lurking for a while and have read up a fair bit but I think that is confusing my poor melon even more.
thanks for any help. Curtis

If you follow the guide in this thread, you don't need to do anything else. In fact you won't even be rooting your phone, all you're going to do is to update the firmware using a simple program (Odin).
If you want a custom ROM (a modified firmware), then you could try Galaxo 1.6.2.3, which is based on Android 1.6 and fully functional (with overclocking!). However, the procedure is a little bit more complicated, and you should check out the Root subforum. There's also the GAOSP project, which I didn't try because a lot of things don't work yet, it's based on Android 2.1 and the procedure is similar to the one for Galaxo, but not identical.
If you follow the tutorial to update your firmware to 1.6, you shouldn't encounter any problems, and if you do, you can always go back to the original firmware you have (bmik6). It's really simple, but it can be stressful the first time. Just take your time, backup your stuff and follow the steps!
If anything goes wrong (which can't really happen) or if you have any questions, lots of people here will do their best to help you!
