If I follow DaSchmarotzer's tutorial....am I missing a step? Do I need to root the phone first?...I find lots of threads about both rooting and firmware upgrades but not much crossover to relate the two.

I have downloaded the software needed and what is talked about in the tutorial is straight forward enough for me to grasp but..........or am I just making this seem harder than it really is.

I have been lurking for a while and have read up a fair bit but I think that is confusing my poor melon even more.

thanks for any help. Curtis
I was there a couple of days ago, and I have a bit of programming experience .

If you install Galaxo's ROM, then it's already "rooted" (i.e. super user permissions in Android, which are normally locked out so you don't mess anything up). Think "administrator privileges" in windows as an analogy.

Before you go on, I'm will give you a bit of a caution about the current ROMS out there. Both 1.6 ROMS I tried out (JC6 and Galaxo, which is based on JC6), don't seem to work very will with my Bell Samsung Galaxy's (i7500L) GPS. Whereas the stock Bell Rom picks up a GPS signal almost instantly.

A couple of things that I found annoying to find/things to remember when installing the roms:
  1. If you flash JC6, DO NOT flash the "PHONE" part, just the "PDA" part. Make sure there is nothing that says "amss" in the PDA tar. If there is, just grab a different JC6 archive, from this site that does not have (just to be safe, I'm assuming you can delete amss and have issues, but I'd rather be safe).
  2. Download the stock Bell ROM entitled I7500BMIK7, in the event you need to flash back.
  3. For flashing the recovery (which allows you a set of tools on your phone to flash Galaxo, among other things), you need the correct drivers and a set of tools you can download (if you search this site, you should be able to find them). The tools allow you to communicate with the phone. In this set of tools, there is a binary (program) called fastboot.exe. This is the fastboot that Galaxo talks about in his instructions.
  4. Hardware buttons:
a)"Fastboot mode": with the phone off, press the bottom two buttons (Send and End). Your phone must be connected to the computer with the correct drivers, and you need the appropriate tools to use this fastboot mode to put the "recovery" onto your phone.

b)"Recovery mode": Phone off, press the volume down and bottom two buttons (Send and End). This will boot the recovery, if you have it installed.

c)For flashing JC6, you will need to use what I, for lack of a better term, call "downloading mode". With the appropriate drivers and tools (odin), and your phone (which is off) connected to the computer press volume down, OK, END. If it works you will see a blue Icon and the term "Downloading."

This information helped me clear up some of the cobwebs (many of which still exist regarding a few things) that existed for me. The remaining information on this site should be enough to get you the ability to flash.

One last summary/note: the tools required to flash JC6 are different from what is required to flash Galaxo. For JC6 you need odin, and use the "downloading mode" method. For Galaxo you need the fastboot (etc.) tools, and need to use "fastboot mode" to install a recovery, then essentially copy Galaxo's rom (and the PDA tar in JC6 renamed to SAMSUNG.tar) to the root directory (i.e. the first directory) of your phone, and use the recovery to flash the rom and SAMSUNG.tar to restore G-apps (google-specific apps left out of the ROM for legal purposes).

Flashing Galaxo, in my opinion, is safer than flashing JC6 via odin, less things you can mess up.
