now then chaps,

I am the proud new user of cm7 and I don't know what to do next! I am downloading titanium back up again to hopefully restore a few things, but where do I go to see the state of internal memory and manage applications etc?

Looks good, but i don't know much about it, it has all latest mods and tweaks, pretty standard stuff for all CM7 custom roms. i am using Apocalypse now, almost all same things just the looks are different.

Use the settings menu. Everything is there, some names might be different from stock but all is there, in fact checkout the CM settings, there are loads more customization that you can do.

Thanks again ayush29k for your expert help. I have a couple of questions:

Prior to switching to CM7, I backed up my apps with a thing called "backup master" and now I don't know how to retrieve them - any ideas?

When I used CWM recovery to partition my SD card, would it have given me EXT2, 3 or 4?

Thanks in advance!!

Never used this app but looking at the play store, it has really bad reviews, doesn't seem to support 2.3.7(cyanogenmod) and ICS.
I use Titanium backup and MyBackup for backing up everything. Along with this i always have a nandroid backup just in case the entire rom crashes.

CWM5 can make partitions upto ext 3 only, it cannot make ext 4 partition. You can use PX recovery instead of CWM to make an ext 4 partition.
Don't ask me much about px recovery, never used that actually but people say it supports ext4 partitions. I use CWM5 and have a 500mb ext3 partition, i got no problems with it, still running smooth and soft.

So.... in Link2sd, when faced with the sd card partition options of ext2, ext3, ext4, fat32/16, would I be ok in selecting ext3?

You'd be okay if you selected ext3 during partitioning. If there was no selection during partitioning then just check ext3, its most probably that only.

Sorry its been some time since i partitioned my card, i don't remember the exact steps.

Hi ayush29k, there were no options to select during partitioning in CWM5, unless they're burried in some settings somewhere..... hence, I have no clue as to what partition format it gave me! Youtube video tutorials were mixed - some would select ext2 in Link2sd, some would select ext3! What are the consequences if I select the wrong one?

In that case just select ext3.
Nothing much, i guess it won't be able to mount the partition properly.

Stock roms are really bad, even a custom stock isn't as good as a CM rom, and a custom CM is even better
I can't even think about using the stock rom again, it so buggy and restricted.
CM is speed and beauty, a complete new experience.

It would appear that with Link2sd, I can actually MOVE some apps (linked-in, unit converter, ebay) to the sd card. I mean MOVE, as opposed to LINK to sd card's ext partition! Is this consistent with what other people have found?

I can't say for sure, i haven't used link2sd much, but CM in itself is capable of moving apps to sd card on its own, better than stock. CM can move even those apps to sd card which the stock rom stated unmovable, however at times it only moves a part of the app and the rest stays behind in the internal memory. This does not affects the app's function but clears some space in the internal memory.

Hi there, I'm a real nooby here, so I may be speaking out of school, but what I have gleaned over the past week is that while many of these procedures do work, the files are product specific. It took me a lot of reading around and asking questions to the point that I was probably annoying, before selecting recovery and ROM files. Sorry for not being more helpful, but my point is one has to be very careful.

First of all you have an Xperia X8 and this method is for Samsung Galaxy ACE. now the method might be similar for your phone or not, but i would recommend that you never try anything that is not made for your device and follow the guides that are for your phone only.

Secondly, if you are using a windows PC, you cannot access the ext partition from that. Windows don't support ext partitions, only FAT, FAT32 and NTFS partitions are supported.

Hi Ayush29k,

Things are working out very well phonewise, thanks to you and your experience. My internal memory issue has gone away now.

Are there some regular maintenance activities that I should apply? For example, I've read snippets in the forums like "make sure you clear your cache every couple of days..." and a somewhat surprising comment of "don't use task killers - CM7 manages its memory way better and will result in better battery life..."

I hope you are having a good day.

Glad its all working out for you

Well i haven't used link2sd much so i can't say if you should clear cache or not, but if its written in the guide then there's no harm doing it, it'll keep your phone clean and light. I use amarullz script, it works well for me.
Task Killers are a NO for entire android, i said this on another thread too where you asked alternatives for taskmanagers on CM. Android system don't need app killers and task killers etc, its own management system takes care of that. In fact using task killers just disrupts normal processes instead of helping them. I still have task killers installed but i use them only when an app crashes and refuse to shut down or when i am running out of ram and i need more speed out of the system, but never otherwise.

I have been operating with my rooted, CWM5'd, cyanogenmod'd and link2sd'd Ace for two or three weeks with totally stable performance. My gripe is I can only get about 8 hours of battery life. Is this typical or do i simply need a new battery?

8hrs is way too less, but it also depends on how much you use.

Mine gives me about 18hrs, i have 2G always on and in use, some haptic feedback, lots of online gaming, so basically just net usage and display consumes my battery. I am also OC'd to 864mhz so that could also be a factor in reduced battery life but overall 18hrs is good enough.

Could be, because having a phone which runs only for 8hrs is absurd.
If you have another ace, you can check if its the battery or your rom, or you can make a backup of your rom and flash a stock rom through Odin and see your battery's performance, if its still 8hrs with stock then your battery is faulty, otherwise your rom has not been flashed properly.

Well, not sure if you remember, but until about two months ago, I was on all stock and battery performance was just like it is now, so I'm gonna get a different battery!
Thanks again!
