Thumbs up Partition SD Card to FAT 32 and EXT4

Hey, is there any way to increase your internal memory??
As we know we have very low internal memory on our SGA. I was browsing XDA forums for my brothers samsung galaxy mini and found this thread which said i could format my SD card into to partitions, one FAT32 and the other EXT4. where FAT32 will be used for normal storage like songs etc and the EXT4 partition can be used for storing apps and this acts like a extension to the internal memory. Can this be done for SGA?
If so please give me a step by step procedure. Thanx a lot

SGA(rooted) running cm 7.2 stable release.

Yes it can be done for SGA, in fact its quite common, you just partition your sd card and use the apps to control which files to be stored on sd-ext and which on internal memory.

Try these methods:
S2E for CM roms only: [Guide] REAL guide for FULL Apps2SD using Clockwork. - xda-developers
Link2sd for any other rom: [TUT]install apps as much as you can, DON'T WORRY ABOUT MEMORY!![FAQ's][14/7/2012] - xda-developers
App2sd: couldn't find a tut, but its alot like link2sd. Search at xda for tutorial.
Amarullz Script:[script][share] AMARULLZ DATA TO SD-EXT(A2SDX) - xda-developers
This one is quite new at SGA, it still has issues, many people report problems with this, so probably not for you, but its good for knowledge, it'll be fixed very soon.

I would also say that you should upgrade to the latest CM nightly, its much better than the so called stable version.

i did the s2e thing and got LOADS of free memory!! thanx! but i read on xda that i should not clear dalvik cache from cwm recovery if i have done this..as it might give me some probs..can u explain..
then wht about when i flash new roms ?? do i clear dalvik cache or no..coz in instructions its mentioned..and what about the apps installed in this ext4 partition..can they be backed up and restored to the same place with titanium backup??

When you flash a new rom, you already format system, data, cache, sd-ext, each and everything is erased, it doesn't even matter if you erase the dalvik cache then.

When you flash new rom you have to install s2e fresh and move all apps to sd-ext.
I think TB can handle them, you should ask these questions in the S2E thread at xda, you'll get better answers there.

No idea mate, i don't use launcher pro at all, i always use adw.
But i know that every theme won't be a launcher in itself. Its just an apk you install, then the theme comes up in the launcher's theme selection box and you can apply it in there. That's how it is in most launchers.
Install the launcher, install the themes then apply the themes from the launcher's settings

Since the ACE has a very low internal memory, and most of the apps available these days are required to be installed on the internal memory, so the number of apps that can be installed on it become very limited.
So what these methods do is to create a partition on the sd card(fat32 or ext), then we use these methods to fool the system into thinking that this partition is a part of the internal memory only, hence we get an increased internal memory, the original internal memory + the sd card partition.
Only a limited part of sd card is partitioned into ext2/3/4 format and used as internal memory, rest of the space is used normally like an sd card.

Partitions can be created/edited/deleted by using partitioning tools like minipartition tool etc. Even the custom recovery all root users install can create and format a partition, although its functions are limited but it does the basic job.

Sorry i didn't understand your partition size problem. You need 1 normal fat32 partition and 1 ext3 or ext4 partition, both primary. Just partition for ext using minitool partition(whatever ext partition size you want, personally 4Gb is a lot) and reformat the remaining sd card partition as fat32.
So the card will be divided into 2 sections, regular fat32 for your music and stuff and an ext partition for your apps.

As for the memory, simply partitioning the sd card won't give you extra memory, you have to use a script or app to make the phone recognize and use that ext partition as an extension of the internal memory.

This will help you,

Nobody can help you until unless you don't read!
I gave you the link days ago and asked you to read it, that's the only way to get more internal memory, otherwise just uninstall some applications to make space for new ones.

4gb!!...hmmm thats big, Did you partition it through phone or pc?

Is there any other mount script in the init.d folder that might be interfering?
What rom and kernel are you using?

Look mate, the person who wrote that tutorial is not trying to pass time writing useless things, if you want it to work you will have to follow each and every step. If you don't understand something then first search for it on xda or google it, still you have problems ask in that thread, all those hundreds of comments are from experienced users, they have gone through exactly what you are going through. Your doubts are most likely already answered in the thread if you take the time to read all of it.

Now what you have missed here is the most important part of the process, your current system does not allows 3rd party/user scripts to be added in it, and for this to work you need to make the system take those scripts so that it can use the ext partition on the sd card as internal memory, else that ext partition is a worthless waste of space, the phone won't even recognize it.

CF-root is a custom kernel for stock roms made by ketut.kumajaya, it gives your phone the ability to run user made scripts, they are stored in a folder called init.d, the kernel creates the folder in the system and makes the system able to run the scripts stored in that folder.

Now you can either follow the tutorial or leave the method, its your choice.

Try to search for cf-root on xda, its available in many threads, put it in the search box and you will get a working link. There might be even a thread where ketut originally released the kernel, that link would be definately working.

What do you mean by 'nothing happens'?? you are supposed to flash the kernel.
Either by CWM or through Odin, whichever process the file you downloaded supports. Get the flashing instructions from the place you downloaded the file from.

see if you can flash it manually through recovery. Keep a nandroid backup with you in case you have to revert back.

Also, cf root s5830 v 3.7 b83 is not the latest version, latest is b84

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1158197
Look in this thread, last 5 paragraphs are about b84, you need to flash b84 by recovery and then use cwm manager to flash b84 fix. Get B84 fix from here, the B84 cf root's link is dead, get it from somewhere else.

Where did you get the file? give me the link pls

Assuming you have ClockworkMod recovery 5.0.2.6, enter recovery menu by holding the home and power button, you will enter the recovery menu.
Go into Mounts and Storage and mount /system and /data.
Then click on Install zip through sd card> Select the cf-root b84 zip file.

For the fix file, get the ext4 app mentioned in the tutorial and select flash kernel in it.
Don't forget to make a CWM nandroid backup before.

P.S. It will be much easier to just flash a stock based custom rom than doing all this, those are preloaded with cf-root, just get a partitioned card and install link2sd!

I don't know where you got this link, i just hope its not corrupted or something, links without proper instruction threads seem pretty risky to me, i just hope it works for you.
Dude you need to get the basics first, i don't think you can handle link2sd, specially if there comes any stability issues later. You don't even have CWM.
Why did you root the phone in the first place? you can't do anything without CWM and basic root tools!

[TUTORIAL] How to upgrade, root, flash Recovery & Custom ROM Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830 - xda-developers
Read the steps in this tut, these are the basics recovery operations that most root users use almost daily.

Home+Power+Volume up is download mode.
Home+Power is recovery menu. flash CWM 5.0.2.6 as stated in the tutorial. Then read the cf-root tutorial's last 5 paragraphs and then read the link2sd thread.

If you want to skip all this, just look at the new tut i gave today, read the custom rom procedure, select a stock based custom rom from xda and flash it! If any terms confuse you, google them! you can't survive in android root world without google, you'll end up bricking your phone without basic knowledge.
I read for 2 months before i even thought about rooting, and that was a very good decision, its been almost a year and i never had to flash stock firmware through Odin ever! My procedures and modifications never crashed on me.

You should read more, explore xda, its full of knowledge, it will take time now, but it will serve you much better in future.

P.S You have S5830 right? and not S5830i..??? All this is for S5830 only!!

Doesn't look like it, its for S5830 only.
Its a good thing i read the previous posts again, you could have destroyed your phone with this. That's what happens when you don't read, in general when we post in this forum without mentioning our exact phone model, it by default assumed to be the original ACE S5830 only, if your phone is different you should mention it, otherwise you will get wrong replies and might damage your phone.
All the guides i gave here are for S5830 only! You will not find S5830i written anywhere inside them, you should have noticed that bro.

Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830 - xda-developers
Look here, there are separate threads for S5830 and S5830i. See if there is a similar method given for your model.

For future: Always mention your exact phone model whenever you ask someone anything, and never use anything that is not made for your device. S5830 is not same as S5830i, they are very different devices.

Thanx ayush29k for your patience - I know you were getting annoyed during this thread. I too am guilty of jumping onto this (I am also an Ace user) and thinking that I could pick up a few tricks and overcome the minimalistic internal memory issue overnight. Thank you for spelling out the requred basics.
So many times during these threads I read things like: simply root the phone, partition the sd card, use link2sd and all will be good. Based with a little linux knowledge from a few years ago, I thought it would be simple.... How wrong was I?!!!!
I think that your stretched patience and the need to tell akashshah "Why did you root the phone in the first place? you can't do anything without CWM and basic root tools!" certainly made me realise that one can't simply jump into this kind of thing - one really needs the absolute basics! (and a real beginer's step by step guide!)
Thanx again

I have no problem explaining things again and again as long as the other person is willing to make an equal effort and benefit from the work. I am no developer, i have zero linux knowledge, i just read and use things others made, but i try my best that others benefit from my experiences, and my experience tells me that even a slightest negligence can cause you to destroy your phone, this field needs a lot of patience and common sense, and above all you need to read as much as you can. I know i spent 2 months on reading before i got the courage to root my phone
And fortunately enough, after switching through several roms, mods and tricks, i have never had to reinstall my stock rom through Odin, the only setbacks i got were a couple of minor bootloops.

If you are willing to try an experimental script to solve your internal memory problem, i would suggest you install the Amarullz script. It was originally made for htc devices but the developer tried to make it work in other devices too, but it still needs work, fortunately it works for ace, although only for some people have got it working rest have reported it non-functional or unstable. It basically does all the job link2sd does but in this you don't have to set any settings and make configurations, it does everything itself. Just install it and forget it. I am using it since last 2 months, haven't had any problem since. You can try it when you flash a new rom, because if there are any problems with the script, you can simply flash the new rom again, you will have no data loss or any time loss.
Its very easy to install i made a partition on my card, installed the script using root explorer and rebooted. Have installed more than 400mb of apps already and still have lots of space to use.

Thanx again ayush29k

I do not want to try the amarullz method. I would like to get into this (gently at first) from first principles and become educated as I go.

So I have a stock standard phone straight off the shelf (probably with a few updates) and it looks like this:

Model number: GT-S5830
Android Version: 2.3.3
Baseband version: S5830XWKPA
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7perf-CL561786root@DELL128#1
Build number: GINGERBREAD.XWKPY

My major objective is to overcome the minimalistic internal memory issue and a secondary objective is to gain better battery performance.

I have read about rooting the phone, flashing the ROM, partitioning the SD card and installing the software to link the apps to the sd card's "internal memory"

Seems like there's a lot of information out there and some things work for some and not others. How would one know which ROM to select..... which kernel.... etc etc...

So, after reading a few of the tutorials and watching youtube vids and scanning down these forums, what would be the very first thing I would do in my venture to get more "internal memory"

Thanks in advance ayush29k!

I'd suggest you root first, install custom recovery a.k.a ClockworkMod recovery and then just flash a custom rom. The custom rom will take care of most of the requirements for setting up the link2sd, also it will give you additional performance and features and just less bugs and glitches.
You can either go for stock based custom roms or CyanogenMod based roms. Both have their pros and cons, depends on your requirements. Check the xda for latest roms and stuff.
For kernel just see what everyone else recommends with the rom and just keep updating it whenever the new updates are released. It is mainly for overclocking cpu, setting governors and battery life, choose which has good reviews and has suitable features for you.

ayush29k progress report:

Ace is rooted as per upd_1.zip and successful - got the android + crossbones + eye patch icon! Updated superuser from market (google apps).

Next is Clockworkmod recovery. Seems like for my Android 2.3.3, cwm 5.0.2.6 will be good. Let me know if you agree or have other advice please.

Thanx again,

Dave

CWM 5.0.2.6 is perfect, although a version 6 was released but i won't recommend that just because i have not used it myself. CWM 5 is tested and proven.

Update the Su binary also from the superuser app. There is an option for it inside the app.

When you say "update the Su binary" are you saying that popping to google play and installing the superuser update is not sufficient? Is there something I need to do within the superuser app?

Thanks!

Yes, its there in superuser app's settings menu. Update the Su binary. Updating the entire app from play store is not much useful, there aren't much differences in them, at least not from the end user's point of view. Its just used to make sure no unauthorised app gains access to the root system, you will have to approve access for any app you install to access root section of your system, and that is controlled by superuser, kind of a gatekeeper.

Thanx again ayush29k, I found the update facility and watched the red turn to green! Currently running with cwm 5.0.2.6 and no problems to report!
