Question Baseband in India?

Hello everyone!
I've already done a long search but it seems no one has this issue so I might just post this here:
I'm currently in India, and bought a 3g data plan, but it is not working on my galaxy ace. However, I have 2g navigation but it's way too slow. Wifi and everything else works perfectly.
I never used 3g in my home country.
Somebody told me that I had to change the baseband of the cellphone. I have already rooted it, but I'm still not sure if this is the solution.
I have already tried dialing *#*#4636#*#*, and under Phone information selected the network preferred type to "WCDMA only", and turned off/on radio, but then I get no radio reception at all (no 2g, no 3g, can't even make calls).
What should I do?
My phone data is this:
Model number: GT-S5830M
Baseband version: S5830MWHLB1
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7 (this line is directly under the kernel version: se.infra@SEP-99 #1)
Build number: GINGERBREAD.WHLB1

Any help would be very appreciated.

Make sure your carrier has 3g coverage in your area.. 3g works fine for me here in bangalore with good seed but in my home town i get 3g coverage only when i am outdoor.

Yes, I am sure there is coverage here. I event tried the SIM Card in another phone (Galaxy S2) and it immediately started working in 3g, so that leaves us with an issue in my phone, right?.
