Default Acer liquid pre-release wagon starts a-rolling and first impression...

well, drioid and SE X3/10 may have stolen the thunder from the first properly announced snapdragon andorid phone but I have seen it up for pre-order in the UK. (I imagine UK market will get this first as the PR came from acer.co.uk)

King of Gadgets - Pre order no proce
expansys - Pre order 356 Inc VAT

now that is actually less expensive then what KOG is HTC Hero! so if this price drops more after release as it should will this become the best selling sim free droid 2.0???

The donut 2.0 posted on that link is speculative. As of today(after more than a month with the phone) it is still runnin 1.6.

Lancewood - how you getting along with the Liquid? I've been looking upon the pre-order pages since they appeared in the UK and on the face of it it seems like a good deal.

At the moment all the 'reviews' out there are at best pre-release or worse still regurgitation of someone elses brief hands-on.

Are you willing to post a mini-review?

I'm interested in the following personally:

-General build quality and looks - that bezel looks kinda large to me
-Screen quality, both in-doors and outside
-Battery life, this is still the first snapD android handset on the market, how long are you getting?
-Has it got a digital compass? (not a big concern but a nice to have these days)
-Any obvious bugs in the SW, either the vanilla Android elements or the Acer customisations?

Many thanks for any info proffered!

Please excuse the horrific spelling above, I can't find the spellchecker on this forum tool

Default Acer A1

Does this phone work on the US 3G+ Bands (i.e. ATT, T-Mobile, Rogers)?
Is there an american version?

Not a clue mate, don't understand the technicalities of frequency acronyms but... perhaps gsmarena can help.

actually, in the networking configuration, you can chose on what 3G bands you want it to work, gives a choice between auto, US, Eur, japan and 2 australian configurations,

whats really really killing me is that i charged it 4 hours ago, and its allready at 79% battery, maybe the indicator is miscalibrated, im gonna wear it down a bit, maybe the battery is defective or just new and is still on the bottom of the curve,

but the fact that it consumed 21% of the battery in a little more then 4 hours is a bit disconserting for me. especialy becuase GPS, BT and Wifi are all shut down,

I pre-ordered my Liquid and it arrived on the UK release date (Tuesday). I am finding that it absolutely chews through the battery though - with wi-fi turned off it managed to go through 50% of its charge in 8 hours. I'm thinking that something in the power management isn't right.

Is anyone else experiencing really terrible battery life?

i can confirm your findings, the battery is at 19% after around 15 hour use, and the battery information is reporting 95% of the power is being used by the android system, not the phone or the display, meaning theres a serious OS problem or a defective battery,

today is the 11nd, and i bought it on the 8, meaning i have 12 days to ship this baby back to expansys, im going to run the battery to zero and then give it a couple of more cycles, if the battery dosnt "wake up" in 2-3 days, this thing is getting RMA for refund,

Default Battery life

Hi

On the question of battery life, I moved from a HTC Hero to HTC HD2, which I had for a couple of weeks (sold last night - can't stand windows mobile!). Battery life on the HD2 was also very minimal, and as that also has a Snapdragon processor, I think it may just be that is the cause.

Just ordered from Expansys, shipped, hope it arrives in the morning!

Although I don't have a Liquid yet, I have to tell you that Android phones in general have a terrible battery life. The reasons are numerous:
1. very high frequency of accessing mail (both other mail and google mail)
2. always on data services (especially the sms messenging app)
3. many apps install background apps that are always on, and check the internet at all times
4. the gps locator is always on
5. Google voice is always checking the internet

The following are the strategies that I have employed to minimize this issue:
1. download from the market: advanced task killer; use it often to kill tasks
2. check your download mail frequency, and your background data sync frequency
3. buy additional batteries from eBay (they are usually inexpensive); never leave home without a spare one!
4. buy a stand charger to charge your phone and a spare battery at the same time (also eBay)
I know that some of these techniques won't work yet with the Liquid because the secondary market isn't there yet; However, it will be there soon.

Ive just ordered mine from pixmania for 294, the I7500 apparently chewed battery as well before they release a new firmware in the UK - here's hoping for the same.

although android still needs power management work, I plan just to use 3G when browsing - that is one of the battery eaters as well!

Well,
the important things are Disable data connection from the acer configuration, enable when you want use it, shut it off when youre done,
brightness at 25-30% and disable background data to avoid the phone trying to connect out by itself,

and use advance task killer often,

but im starting to think, if i have to kill connectivity and alot of services to get decent battery life, i dont see much of an upgrade over my old E71, that could run for quite a while with those things on,

it ran for 2 days with full connectivity and 5-6 days on plain standby,

yep pretty woeful battery life here too :-/ I've disabled background data (until I need it) screen at 20% - gps off! will see how I go from here.

Anyone having a problem with the autocomplete feature of the keyboard when typing message/email? mine never shows suggestions like the dictionary is missing - it does work when I add words myself but common suggestions are completely missing - I've locale and language set correct and autocomplete on!??

I think you are overreacting. The Live Sync does take quite some power but it shouldn't create that much of a battery drain. If it does its a bug, to be expected in a new phone.

This is most certainly due to the fact that when the phone wake's up to synchronise for example gmail, other apps might kick in and prevent the phone from goin on actual standby.

Sometime its a firmware bug, othertimes it's just a matter of crap app that drains the battery. The Samsung Galaxy battery used not to be able to last more than a day now it's usually up to 2 days with heavy usage!

I am using my Acer as mediaplayer today at work and its seriously chomping through the battery when using the Music app to play MP3s, the phone is getting quite warm, I'm sure it doesn't need to use so much CPU as other devices manage MP3 just fine.

Also checking what has use Battery it does say that 42% was acer sync and no mention of the music player, maybe all acer software comes under the com.blahblah.acersync banner.

Is there a way to downclock cpu?

Most likely Acer Synch is defective I would think.

Try using a task manager app to see how much cpu it's consuming.

any one know a good task manager app, got 6 hrs of usage whilst using it as an mp3 player, this is a lot worse than it was for streaming live radio from the net, so something is up with either the music app or the fact that I have last.fm scrobbling my choices from music player, its only used 1Mb of data all day though.

I'll test tomorrow without last.fm on the system to try and nail down what is doing it, reckon the Music app is probably kicking the CPU into too high a power state, perhaps I'll try another Music player/

try ASTRO file manager to which can be used as a task manager too I've a feeling NemoPlayer could be a battery bandit! its running in "background" in services when I view the task manager even tho I never use it!!

I'm using the Music app, the Nemoplayer app is something else, not as handy as Music player as it doesn't have stuff like party shuffle etc.

something else is killing the battery I hardly used it at all today and was at 10% after 13hours

the battery manager says camera is taking up 95% of batt but I didn't even open it!

overall today - 10sms, 2 minute calls, 30 mins browsing 3g (wifi OFF, gps OFF, sync off) 10 mins email. rest of day in standby and phone battery still depleted ~6% every hour

Yup there must be a dodgy app somewhere in there as this evening with last fm uninstalled and auto sync off my phone has done 5% in 6hrs which is bugger all, but the real test will be at work tomorrow when I use MP3.

yeah defo is or "was" in my case.

when I went into see which apps were using battery yesterday it was:

media (with a pic of a camera beside it) 95%
idle 3%
standby 3%

today is (after reboot & after charging)
standby:37%
android system:24%
idle: 33%
display:6%

these figures seem to be about right. yesterday using 95% was the camera so even on standby the phone was draining.

just used 3% of battery in just under 2hours with some moderate sms texting so hopefully todays test goes better!

Normal battery drain when not doing a great deal just bluetooth and theodd browse/app DL seems to be in the region of a 1% per hour or there abouts, so from last nights charge I was at 84% after 16hrs which is bang on the 1% per hour, course popped mp3 on and it dropped to 80% in about 15mins though it did also include some updates and call.

so I decided to track battery life and actually it wasn't too bad, seems last.fm scrobbling might have been my problem, or the Acer Sync, I'm not sure, I reckon the what's using battery thing is inaccurate and sends you on a wild goose chase, I disabled auto syncs but even when auto sync was on the Syncs were not performed as the date/time stamp on the syncs remained the same so I am at of bit of a loss as to what happened

Current drain info running MP3 non stop in work with the odd call/sms
included.

10:15 79%
11:15 73% 6% per hour
12:15 68% 5% per hour

turned the auto sync on at 12:15 to see impact, obviously its not exactly scientific as I can't control calls/sms I get of which I had a few over lunch as well as the obligatory app demos to my friends etc. but gives a good idea to drain.

13:15 57% 11% don't know if its the sync yet due to usage
lucnhtime, or should I say android playtime.
14:15 51% 6% this was an uneventful hour so likely representative
15:15 45% 6% at this point I disabled sync
16:15 Doh working to hard forgot to check
17:20 34% almost missed it again 5.5% an hour, so sync barely made an
impact so popped it all back on.
18:15 28% so another 6% but sync,GPS,BT are on, puts me at a loss for what went wrong the other day I was listenig to music.

the phone is really not too bad, I guess the an app must of crashed in a funny state or something as I've not stopped the MP3 since I started work this morning. Thats 9 hrs playing MP3, with a total uptime of 24hrs at the mo under what i would call normal usage conditions, still running with 28% left.

I'll pop last.fm back on as it may have been unnecessarily blamed by a dodgy app state but I'm quite happy with that performance.

yeah i think my first day was an anomoly - the "media" usage in the battery screen was at 95% and was DRAINING the battery. yesterday I had >60% charge left after I got home from work unplugged for 11 hours

that included 10min voice calls, 20 sms, send/receive maybe 10 emails and 30 mins browsing over HSDPA so I'm happy with that! I notice ~1% per hour when in standby too which is ok I guess.

1st day I got home it was nealry dead!! luckily I don't use it as an MP3 player either

After some testing yesterday I can confirm last.fm was my battery killer, it defaults to real time scrobbling, disable this and you can run it with minimal battery life impact.

Also should be noted that I use a 3G network for voice too, so whereas most people default to 2G my 3G is always on, so most people should get double the life I am seeing.
