I'm ready and starting to get a bit annoyed to be honest. I know it's not yet april but there's no reason we should still be waiting. I mean seriously you can go to the store right now and get a cheap arse coby tablet with ICS already installed for $100 yet here we are still waiting. Don't get me wrong I wouldn't trade my A500 for a kyros but one would think acer would be able to get their act together by now.

Default Android changes

Hopefully Google will very quickly launch a co branded tablet. If they do that it could help to change Android to a stand alone OS with the bloutware as a seperate system running with the Android OS. This would let Google proceed with updates to the OS by itself, and we would not have to wait for Acer,Asus or Samsung to rewrite it. This would also carry over to the phone market,no waiting for the phone maker or carrierto rewrite the OS.

Anyone have thoughs on this?

yeah but wouldn't it impede the amount of devices released with said type? im all for bloatware free but i think even with that type you would still have third party

My understanding was that Acer is the vendor of Google's upcoming tablet. Hopefully that might shorten the wait for us. Or, I suppose, make it longer if they're too busy playing with Google.

What I was trying to say was Google needs to make Android more like a PC OS ,in that it operates seperately from the bloatware that Acer,Asus and Samsung add. This would not help us with our current tablets, but would help all future tablets and phones. There would not be any fragmentation in Android and when Google has an update or new version we can use it immediately without waiting for the tablet manufacturers having to overwrite it.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Would you rather wait a few more weeks and have a stable OS with everything working or would you like it now and have constant force-closing and mysterious reboots? I'll wait a little longer, thank you very much.

If you pay attention to Windows releases, they go through a process of developer testing, alpha testing, beta testing THEN release (RTM). Right now, I imagine Acer is in the Beta phase and very close to the RTM stage, only with these releases (unlike Windows where the consumer preview is open to anyone with a MS Live account) the beta testing is restricted to a select group of people.

While I agree with what you're saying that, once Acer release their official version, everything will be working as it should...

I have only had my A500 since the beginning of March and rooted pretty much straight away. Although I admit I have had one issue with it, that has been it in a little over a month... there haven't been constant force closes and mysterious reboots

I realise that, once Acer have released their official version, the devs will be able to do their magic and the custom ROM's will not be lacking in anything but, in the mean time, I'm not really missing the features that aren't available, as they aren't available!

My point is that people are complaining and whining that the update isn't out yet. I realize that once Acer drops the release it will be fully working. Previous experience (other devices) has been that people whined so much that it seemed like the update was rushed and ended up with issues that could have been avoided or found with more testing, the GB update for the TB was released and almost immediately pulled due to bugs that could have been found with more testing.

In the end, be patient, the patience will pay off in the long run when they don't have to update the update because the first one was buggy...

Oh yeah... I completely understand. I actually prefer to root and run custom ROM's, as I like to change them every now and then.

I know what you're talking about though... it is coming and I'm sure it won't be long!

What's the difference in the hardware with the tablets? Isn't the 200 the newest version?

I'd rather have a "good" version. Less chance of a glitch. I do agree about the dates - even if they stated July, I can wait. Just knowing it will be available then would be fine.

If these are all wifi only tablets at least you aren't dealing with a carrier who could add more delay time by insisting on carrier bloatware.

Yes the A200 is newer, only released end of 2011 (early 2012 in US). Afaik the only difference in hardware is the A200 doesn't have the rear facing camera or HDMI out.
I have been on ICS for a while now on my A200 and just got another Acer OTA update to 4.0.3.
The positives are awesome battery life, the ability to disable apps and improved browsing, no keyboard lag.
I had a couple of games that stopped working with ICS.

Apart from the "that's cool" factor, I don't see the point of face unlock, given the problems with unreliability and lack of security.

If you want security you'd use a pattern PIN or password.
If you want speed of access just turn off the lock screen. Since the touch screen is capacitive it isn't going to be activating icons in your case if the power button accidentally gets pressed.

The unlock to app feature, where you swipe to one of four configurable icons on the lock screen, is far more useful.

The face unlock gets annoying after a while, unless you just so happen to be a person who holds your device in such a way that when you hit the power button the camera is already perfectly framing your face.

I got ICS on the Nexus phone. It isn't too bad. I don't know and don't care whether or not it has face recognition. I'd never use it. It does freeze stuff you don't want which is tops in my book.

I agree. The ability to disable apps is one of the best things about ICS.

Either way I'm just thankful for an update, even if it takes a couple of months.

Technically not "MID" until the 15th.

For those of you who are adventurous, the Lightspeed 4.4 ICS ROM seems to run pretty well for me on the A500 tablet. No problems so far since flashing it last night.

I'm still debating on whether I should wait or just root.

I suppose rooting is not for everyone. I first got into it for a very specific reason. The phone I had came with too small an amount of internal memory, and at that time it was running Eclair. Only when Froyo was pushed did the ability to move apps to SD come to us. So to gain Apps to SD capability at the time, the only option before me was to root the phone. I kept the stock OS for awhile, but eventually tried a ROM. It made the phone's performance faster and sleeker than it ever had with the stock OS. I even tried out overclocking.

When I got my current Droid X, I intended to just root it. These days I root for a different set of specific reasons. I like being able to make and restore Nandroid backups of the entire phone and its apps within a few minutes time. I have never found a stock OS app that has such features, and I don't think they exist. Also, along with that, I like the ability to access ALL the file structure for customization, to improve upon or eliminate certain stock aspects, like the insanely annoying Home key on the LG Ally slide out thumb board, which, placed right beside the backspace key, was constantly getting pressed unintentionally and dumping me completely out of an email or forum post as I was typing. It was maddeningly frustrating, not only just for me but for others who posted similar aggravation from it. Having root access allowed me to learn how to actually remap that key so that it became disabled.

The rooted Droid X seemed to be working well with the stock Froyo OS. But, it seems Motorola hosed the alarm notification feature when they pushed Gingerbread to the DX, and all my daily repeating alarms stopped being reliable. I was fortunate to have Voided Saint here on the Forums tell me he believed Cyanogen Mod 7 ROM actually addressed and fixed that issue, and he was totally right. My DX has not missed an alarm since I flashed CM7 months ago.

So, it was only natural to want to root my new A500 tablet when I got it. I wanted to continue making Nandroid backups. Once rooted, the installation or removal of custom ROMs becomes child's play, so trying them is quite easy. Honestly, I flashed Lightspeed 4.4 last night because I was bored. I had been running Thor's HC 3.2.1 ROM prior to this and it had no problems at all.

At this point, I like Lightspeed, but it's only been 1 day. However, once ICS does get pushed to the A500, I will still wait until the devs gain root access using it before I would want it anyway, because I don't want to give up the ability to make Nandroid backups. I wish all devices had that feature baked into them right from the factory. It is a great feeling of security to know even if something totally wipes out my device's files I can get them all back again within minutes (as long as the hardware hasn't failed somehow).

I posted this chat session in another thread as well, but it relates more to this one, so I'm putting it here. I'm not quite sure what the CSR meant for their last statement, but I was assuming it meant it would be announced, and then updated shortly after. He ended the chat session before I could ask unfortunately. It's nothing new really, just more detail on this situation.

Shipin Padmakumar: Hi, my name is Shipin Padmakumar. How may I help you?
Jamie: Hey Shipin, I just have one question.
Jamie: I have seen articles where Acer would be announcing the 4.0 update/ICS in April, could you please verify for me that the update is on the way?
Jamie: I am not in a rush, I've just heard talk of the A500 not receiving the update.
Shipin Padmakumar: I understand your concern.
Shipin Padmakumar: I understand that you would like to know the date of release of the ICS update for A500 tablet.
Shipin Padmakumar: Jamie, please refer the web link:

Acer Support - Answers, E-Mail, Chat - When will Android Operating System 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) be available for my Acer Android tablet?
Jamie: That would be nice to have a date, or a general idea would be fine. Mostly though I just want to make sure the A500 is going to receive the update.
Shipin Padmakumar: Yes, the A500 will get the update around April 15.
Shipin Padmakumar: Jamie, to conclude we have provided the information. If there are no additional questions on this topic, I will close the chat session.
Jamie: So it will receive an actual update, and not an announcement? I'm only asking because "TBA" generally states they will announce a date, but not necessarily release the update.
Shipin Padmakumar: The date will be announce around April 15, however it will be around the same date only.

I followed Gan's lead and decided to chat with customer care. Like them i copied and pasted the convo:

Immanuel MM: Martin, if my understanding is correct you want to know the release date of the Ice Cream Sandwich update, am I correct?
Martin: yes, again i read the above link from the acer website and various forums that we should be getting the update "mid-April" well its mid-April and still there is no update that i can see
Immanuel MM: I understand your concern.
Immanuel MM: I will do my best to resolve the issue.
Immanuel MM: May I confirm that you are contacting from US?
Martin: yes
Immanuel MM: Thank you for your confirmation.
Immanuel MM: Martin, I have checked in my database and found that the Ice Cream Sandwich update will be released between 19th April and 27th April 2012.
Martin: is that the for sure dates, because again, another agent has went on record saying that we should get the updates on the 15th
Immanuel MM: You can take my word.
Martin: thank you i appreciate it.
Immanuel MM: Our database has been updated now and now it is showing that the Ice Cream Sandwich update will be released between 19th April and 27th April 2012.
Martin: is there a link to that information?
Immanuel MM: Unfortunately we do not have any link contains that information.
Immanuel MM: Martin, to conclude I have provided you all the information. If there are no additional questions on this topic, I will close the chat session.

Notice that in the above chart, for the A500 it shows "to Start" on April 27 (not 19th). And of course "start" implies that not every A500 will see the update on 4/27.
