I have no experience at all with Skype, but gave it a go for you anyway. Here is a Skype Support forum thread you may find helpful as far as gaining information:

Skype Video for Acer Iconia Tab A500 - Skype Support Network

It seems to indicate that Skype video does not work on the A500, and when I went to the support site's "get Skype" link, I also discovered that there is no download link for Skype for Android OS. Oddly, they list Android in the initial menus, but it is not there once you drill down to the actual download links. This doesn't look good for solving your problem, but it surely appears you can't currently do Skype on the A500. Sorry I could not be more helpful.

That's odd. Where did you download the version of Skype you are using? Perhaps if the member above could get the version you are using they could get it working. Which version is it?

I've never tried using Skype. How much hassle is it to set it up? Is there a subscription or membership fee to use it?

Hmm. Well, there are lots of things to "STOP" aside from romance. I think if you look up the word "flaky" there will be a picture of a 14 year old girl next to it.

Of course, that is not to say that I haven't encountered many adults who also fit the description.

I suppose we all do at some point.

Speaking of, did you see where Arizona wants to make "trolling" on social websites illegal? Seems like they could think of better ways to spend their time, like, oh, I don't know, solving their severe water shortage? Maybe they should make back yard pools in Phoenix illegal.

The only way I could think of to enforce an anti-trolling law would mean that somehow every one of us would need to be immediately identifiable to legal authorities, which would seem to mean some sort of online tracking for every internet user. Not that they aren't already doing some of that, so it seems, but I can't say I'd be happy with having to have some sort of identifier tied to every place I go on the net. It sounds to much like some kind of Orwellian existence with a serial number stamped on our forehead.

I have to agree with the comment I read along with the article where I saw the issue being presented. The guy said that this whole notion of passing a law against people's comments considered trolling was brought on by the "MySpace/Facebook generation", where they want to post every tiny minutia of their lives all day long online for the whole world to see. It seems only natural that one end result of such actions is to encounter things one might not like to see. The world can be a really nasty place sometimes. But passing more laws isn't going to make it all sunshine and roses.

Personally, I feel the current "banhammer" method seems to work quite well in forums and such. So for those places where the format is much less organized, it seems to me they should be re-organized with moderators watching what is said, and to whom one could report a posting that seems out of line. Our legal system is too overloaded now. I see no point in adding to its burden with litigation delving into determining the 'real intent' of some comment someone posted on the internet. We have bigger fish to fry. Like finding a way to feed everyone and give them a decent job.

All that said, I don't want to usurp this thread, so I'll shut up now.

I think my son uses Skype. I'll have to contact him and see if he still does, and maybe give it a try on my A500 to see if I can make it work, once MahaloCat comes back with the version number he is using and source of his download.

I have Skype on my Iconia and it works for voice. It might work for video too but I was not suitably dressed when I took the call so I didn't turn the camera on. Skype came preinstalled on mine. The version number is 2.7.0.907

I just looked on the Play Store, and the free version of Skype being offered is the same as above. My A500 is rooted and running a custom ROM so it doesn't have Skype installed. But I can apparently download and install the same version as you have.

You mention not turning the camera on when you got a call. Is that something you get to decide for each incoming call? (sure seems prudent to me!)

Thanks for the info!

I have it installed from the Play Store and up and running. Tested OK with the sound echo test call, and I am text chatting with my son. He doesn't have a web cam at the moment, and doesn't use it on his phone because he says on "all" smartphones on which he has tried it the program crashed incessantly and generally sucked. But on his PC it seems to run OK.

One problem - the volume of the "sound test echo" voice and playback of my test message was rather loud, and my tablet's volume control rocker had no affect. I turned it all the way to zero and the sound was still very loud. Is there a way to adjust Skype volume? I can't seem to find such a setting.

Well, I spoke too soon about it working OK. I am getting a combination of two problems between Skype on my tablet and on my son's PC. It keeps disconnecting and reconnecting on the A500, and when we tried a voice chat he sounded perfect but he could barely understand me.

According to their "support" forum there are many people with the same issues (but no evidence at all of anyone getting "SUPPORT"). Between that and my son telling me it sucks on cell phones, I guess I won't be using it. I saw a suggestion in one of the other threads dealing with Skype about trying Tango instead. Maybe the OP could look into that?

Fail. Uninstall.

@ OP - for info, I have Skype on my A500 and it works for both video and audio.

Hope you manage to find a solution!
