Touch Wiz, HTC Sense, Motoblur... all garbage.

Stock android is faster and performs better than all these manufacturer skins. The poster on the prior page is correct - Touchwiz would slow down our phones.. thats all these skins do.

i doubt it. had mine over a month and im already looking to upgrade. this phone is cool and all, but it is what it says it is..a great android starter phone. introduced me to the world of android after being a blackberry user for 5 years and iphone user for 1 year and i like it. you can load it up with as much software and mods you want, but until you can improve the hardware, then you can truly say it has alot of potential.

Default New update

New update
New update FROM UNFORGIVEN512 posted NOV 21 THIS IS FROM HIS WEB SITE NOT FROM ME JUST TRYING TO KEEP EVERY ONE UP TO SPEED /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Hey everyone
Well, as I’m sure quite a few of you have heard, I am officially a daddy! This is wonderful news, and I am incredibly excited! Well, I wanted to let everyone know what’s going on.

My fiancee and I have been going through some of the best, and some of the toughest times of our lives. While I will say, the birth of our daughter was, put simply, the most amazing day of our lives, we also have been experiencing some tough times. Our beautiful daughter has been admitted to the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) due to being unable to hold her food down well. This has been extremely hard on me, and I can’t even begin to imagine how difficult this is on Jocelyn.

Jocelyn and I have been spending nearly all of our time at her bedside, giving her love and affection. She is expected to make a full recovery and come home, however, they are unable to give us even the slightest idea as to when this will occur. She has been making improvements, but she has also had regressions. The doctors are unsure of what is wrong, and they’re pretty much hoping that it “fixes itself”. I’m really hoping that she improves rapidly, and is able to come home in the near future.

What does this mean for Jocelyn and I? Well, this has been making a serious dent in the amount of time I have been able to work, so this is going to affect us financially, big time. It also means that we will be travelling to and from the hospital every day, to see her. We will be dedicating almost all of our time to her.

What does this mean for everyone else? Unfortunately, over these coming days, I will not be able to dedicate nearly as much time to working on my projects (namely the Samsung Admire). I know you guys have been patiently waiting for the release of both ClockworkMod recovery, my custom kernel, and (most anticipated) CyanogenMod 7.2. I greatly, greatly appreciate your patience. I will be trying to get some time in there to work on the project. But, unfortunately, as of right now, I am tightly split in between having to work, and spending time with my daughter.

As I’ve said before, $10 buys one hour of dedicated time of working on the Samsung Admire. This offer is still on the table. In all honesty, I would rather work on the Admire than going to work. But unfortunately, as this is on a purely volunteer basis, it does not help pay the bills, nor does it help pay the expenses of travelling to and from the hospital, purchasing meals while at the hospital, etc. If you’d like to donate, I will definitely spend some time working on the project, and this should allow me to get things done much, much faster. And, as I’ve said before, no matter how much or how little you donate, every penny is greatly appreciated. And it’s appreciated even more now than ever. If you care to donate, you can do so at the bottom of this post.

Now for the update on the Samsung Admire: I know you guys want to know what’s going on in Admire-land. I have been making great progress with the device. I have ClockworkMod recovery almost 100% functional, however, I am stuck with one naggling bug related to Samsung’s RFS filesystem. As soon as this is fixed, it will be released. I have been consulting with a few people on a fix, and it should be in place soon, so that’s something for you to look forward to. I know some of you have asked: “Well why don’t you release it as it is?” Well, I would, but with the RFS bug, it’s completely unusable with any stock configuration. With there being no custom ROMs or anything out there, it would be (essentially) useless at this point. This also prevents NANDROID backups of your stock image from working correctly. From my findings with the Samsung Admire, if you do not have a stock NANDROID and you have issues, it puts you in quite a sticky situation. I had to restore partition data from another device, using a version of ODIN that was also for another device, get back into recovery, and manually untar all the data to the partitions after doing rm -rf /{system,data,cache}/*. It was about a 5 hour process to get the Admire functional again. But it will be coming soon, trust me. For any of you who plan on developing ROMs, you can get started, it’d be nice to have a couple ROMs (perhaps a cleaned up stock ROM, or a rooted/deodex ROM, maybe some themed ROMs, etc) available at release of CWM.

Now, for CM. I have been making nice progress. A lot of things are working. But there are still quite a few that are not working. Some things are partially working. Notable things that are not working: RIL (radio interface layer), Camera, GPS, light sensor, battery meter. Pretty much everything else is working. I can not provide an ETA as to when a public beta will go out. I’m sorry. Once again, the more time I can dedicate to it, the faster it will happen. That’s all I can say.

I know, also, a few of you have talked about CyanogenMod 9, wondering if I would try to make it happen on the Admire. Of course! Once the CM team works with the code, and betas start trickling out to various devices, I will definitely work with the code, and see what I can do. This is not a guarantee of whether it will be successful or not, but I will definitely be putting in the effort, and trying. I will say, though, that CyanogenMod 7.2 is the priority right now.

Some of you have also asked “How much should I donate?” — Donate as much as you’d like! I appreciate each and every penny, however, the more the merrier. The more you donate, the more time I can dedicate to working on the project. I can not provide an estimate in the amount of hours it will take to finish the project, simply because it is a rather large project, and there are a lot of variables that can affect speed of development. But, please, feel free to donate as much as you’d like. My family and I appreciate it.

Thank you so much for your support, everyone. You, all of you, are amazing. I’ll try to keep you updated!

You really should give it a chance and give it some time. The Optimus m was marketed as a android starter phone as well and I had mine oc'd at 748 but it was stable well above 800. Running 2.3.5 on it with only an accelerometer bug, it was a great phone, go read through the Optimus m forum you will see multiple posts stating that the phone would 100% never run flash. Even technical details as to why it was impossible to have the phone support it, but guess what, it isn't the most stable part of the phone but it definitely does have a version of flash available to it now. Be patient and I guarantee someone will do something with this phone that will blow your mind.

agreed, i have alot of android phones from different carriers, for testing and doing a little compiling and so forth but this admire is better than a entry level phone and better than the optimus (IMO) but when the esteem came out i had to jump and get 2 cause wifey wanted one also...

Default Samsung Admire

One thing that I think alot of people overlook is that the Admire runs on MetroPCS. Why is this important? Well, Metro was discovered to be using an inferior networking protocol that caused their 4G to run slower than normal EV-DO speeds. It would not surprise me to find out that they played games with the firmware and kernal to "downgrade" the Admire from it's potential. I'm also willing to bet that this is a component of the Radio Layer issue. It would make sense if they were buggering with it to force the unit to report a better signal than it actually was receiving.

just noticed that an HTC g1 got an ICS port, that proves that if that device can do that than our device can do more. I also heard that cyanogenmod needs 2 months for cyanogenmod 9.1. Just wondering if there was an ICS rom? and what's so good about cm than a custom rom? Also can i get info on flashing, does this allow you to receive another carriers data and perfectly send texts and calls?

Yea guess so. I would rather of seen our update and not the nexus. But maybe soon. I know he said he was having a fit with a couple of things. At least he is not releasing something full of bugs and waiting till it is right before release so that is a good thing.
All good things are worth the wait.

It's nice to see someone who can see what the big picture is here. My wife just gave birth to a HEALTHY 7lbs 7oz 19.5in baby boy. My 2nd boy, and 3rd child on the 14th of December, and I have to be honest, I am lucky my newborn is healthy and even i would not be prioritizing my life around an Android phone right now.

I am working double shifts during the day to keep us afloat while my wife is on unpaid maternity leave and then coming home and taking over full duty of all 3 of our kids including getting up every 3 hours with my newborn so my wife can rest and heal mentally as well as physically.

It's draining and exhausting but family is always what matters first.

I have not been on in awhile and have not read any update on how the baby is but I can say again, patience and understanding of this one man's situation is going to get you all much further in the long run than demanding and pressuring him through hard times.

That is like my 3rd, but will be my last "lecture" on the matter, assuming we are all human I don't see the need for pressuring and desensatised comments in this thread or any other thread he may be part of. It'll either happen with this phone or it won't, all that matters right now is they get that baby healthy, and he keep his fiancee mentally stable and hopeful through this hardship.

I chatted (texted) with unforgiven512 a few days ago he says the baby is doing better and is keeping food down better. So looks like baby and momma are doing better. So that is a plus. Did not ask about the phone figured he will mention it when he has something to offer.

Here is our conversation from google+

Doug Caruso Sr - Hows the Family? Better I hope
Dec 12, 2011 - Edit

Unforgiven512 - We're doing pretty well. The baby is doing better, but still having some issues with gas and acid reflux.

I've been working on the admire a bit, as well. Having some trouble getting a binary built correctly; cross compiling is a pain. And busybox can't handle formatting correctly for RFS.

Aside from that, I've been doing work with ICS on the Nook Color. I'm becoming more familiar with the inner workings of ICS -- it's quite different from GB.

Dec 12, 2011

Doug Caruso Sr - Tell momma no spicy food if she is breast feeding. She can pass it to the kid also caffeine. Also thanks for the update on the admire. You might want to drop a note on the forum give folks an update. We will keep you all in our prayers and Have a blessed Christmas,
Doug

Checked his site today and saw he updated with news that the ClockworkMod is almost at 100% save some fine tuning, and he is still making progress with the CyangenMod. Really looking forward to the CWM being finished. I have a few roms I would like to test.

As far as the debate goes on specs, I have had far better phones than the Admire, my iPhone 4 comes to mind right away, and I have had far worse phones. If you think your 800m Samsung is slow, you should try living with a Sanyo Zio. That thing is easily the worst device ever to run Android. If you can call it running. I consider it akin to how a mentally ******ed child would cope in a AP Honors Calculus class. It does the work, but there is alot to be desired.

I like the Admire personally, its not the best nor the brightest, but I chose it over the HTC on the processor specs and the gorilla glass screen. I dont need a 5mp camera when the chip can barely cope with my work load. Hell, my friends HTC Incredible can barely keep up with my usage. Oh well...

I am currently working on porting ClockworkMod recovery as well as CyanogenMod to the Samsung Admire.

I pretty much have ClockworkMod fully working -- I only have a few minor bugs to work out. You can check out a preview of it here: unforgivendevelopment.com/2011/11Se/06/update-samsung-admire-progress/

I am also working on CyanogenMod for the Admire, however, progress here is a little slower.
Currently working:
- Bluetooth
- 3D Acceleration
- WiFi (for the most part, small bugs remain)
- Accelerometer
- Proximity Sensor
- Sound
- Perhaps some things I forgot

Possibly working:
- Radio interface layer (The cell phone "sees" the Metro PCS network. Signal levels are reported incorrectly. I do not have Metro PCS service to test further.)

Not working:
- GPS
- Camera
- Battery indicator
- Light sensor (auto-brightness)
- Other things I may have forgotten

I will be releasing a teaser video of CyanogenMod running on the device within the next few days. You can follow progress at my website, unforgivendevelopment.com , @unforgivendev and/or @unforgiven512 on Twitter

Any donations help. This is not my full time job. I have a wife and a kid to feed.

Regarding this: First and foremost, I can not afford to activate a month of Metro PCS service to ensure calling, SMS/MMS, and data work. This will take approximately $50 to do. Secondly, I work full time (but I do have a flexible schedule). For every $10 donated, I will dedicate 1 uninterrupted hour of work on this project, and nothing other than this project. I need to ensure my family has food on the table and a roof over their heads.

Without donations, this project may take some time. If I receive donations, and I am paid to do the work, I can dedicate my time to the project, and it will get done significantly faster.

If you would be so kind to donate, please send it via PayPal to gerad.munsch@gmail.com -- I appreciate each and every penny. And remember, donations == dedicated Admire-only development time.

Thanks everyone, and keep an eye on the site for updates!

NOTE: This is my first post on this forum. If you'd like to check into some of my past work, feel free to check out my profile over at XDA-Developers (where they, unfortunately, do not have an Admire forum. So I think I'm going to make this my home for Admire development)

Do u need help with the development

I've heard news around the web that an Android newbie broke his Admire, and was able to use CWM from Unforgiven on it. He has to be close to finish.

First off, I want to say that I hope that Unforgiven's daughter is doing better and that he is enjoying being a new father. I appreciate all that he has done to enable development on the admire.

Now, I will mention that MysteryEmotionz and rjmjr69 have gotten a stock recovery image to koush . Hopefully he will be able to find time in his busy schedule to port CWM to the admire so that the custom roms can start. I know that Unforgiven has put a lot of time into this already, so maybe he can communicate with koush and let him know what problems and fixes he has already encountered.

I am with all of you looking forward to this. Have a good weekend all.

well inst there another group that does something similar to CWM? I think its like RAZR or something like that which lets you load custom roms? I would contact them as well, they might not be as busy and at least then its a start.

Hey Doug,

So far, all I have been able to find is their twitter feeds. I am sure that once it is ready, they will make it easy to find. As soon as I see something, I will post the info on this thread. I have to thank rangerrob for pointing me in that direction from this post:
custom rom
I knew that I had been primarily watching this thread, so after I looked into it, I tried to post the information here for convenience sake.

And @glenweitzel

I do not know if that would work or not. I was under the assumption that the kernel was not so accessible or it would have been done by now, but I really do not know. If I can find some time, I will look into trying it: while I do not have a lot of knowledge or experience, I have even less fear! ;-)

Default The thread by the MysteryEmotion

Here is the thread by the new developer. He is getting close and will have something to flash soon, but we are still waiting on a kernel to have a backup via CWM or Odin.

Say Hi to another DEV
