.7 is coming, no update.zip option.
I could never get my app info restored (Titanium Backup locks up when I try to restore apps/market data) so I went back to Birdman v4...
This ROM needs an update option that doesn't kill data, or I need a way to restore apps/market data to try it again. Just don't have the patience to do it manually, and the Marketplace isn't doing it for me automatically...

Hey Redflea ... I search & searched ... nothin! As far as a db that holds that info. But I did come across a "system" that may work for you. This is how I'm keeping my apps up-to-date.
First of all, I use ASTRO to backup my apps, so I don't need the Market telling me what apps I have, or to automatically install them. The truth is, I'd rather install apps myself when I first load a new ROM anyway. I also have a way to batch install all of my apps from my backup folder if I choose. More on that later...
I found an app called aTrackDog. It scans your DROID for apps installed, then it searches the Market and tells you which ones need updating. I've used it twice now, and it seems like it's doing it's job.
Install it and let me know what you think...

Thanks!
I've used atrackdog, used it recently to back up my app list again. That is an option, but I just like the way the market puts my updates right in front of me, notifies me of them, etc. Maybe I'm slightly OCD about trying to keep everything hooked up.
But I'm even more screwed up now...likely something to do with all my futzing about with ROMs, but when I reloaded Birdman v4 my app list on download was complete...however, a little later (not sure how long) I noticed that the list had "lost" many of my installed apps somehow...
Maybe my wife is right, I need to stop mucking about with my phone...
...naaahhhh!

But i got my 5 homescreens and im a happy camper.. and I even got to keep my droid eye in the beginning. my phone doesnt even look hacked :P

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but this doesn't mean that the phone is slowing down. It's just a function of the animations. The animation of a screen switching means that there's a fade effect, etc. that plays. In other words, it does not just switch from screen to screen. Therefore, it will appear slower to your eye, but that's what the animation is by definition. A gradual change, rather than just an on / off switch.
If you download spare parts you will notice that you can change the speed of the animations within the same ROM (works on unrooted phones too).
So do you want a bit of bling or do you want outright speed switching from screen to screen?

The way I see it, I am very happy with V5. V6 had no changes I was interested in, haven't checked V7 yet but until it comes out with a bunch of new features, I'll stick with this. I like what it has and the speed and stability - not one force close yet.

Yes, and no. Removing animations is 1 part perception, but also 1 part actual. Remember that it takes processing power in order to process animations, both by the cpu and video.
One of the first thing I do to tune-up an XP box is get rid of some of the needless animations (fade this, slide that). I haven't yet had someone complain that I took that stuff away. At first, animations have a wow factor. But after awhile, don't we just want things to be snappy?
Then again, I'm a little old skool. No animations. No wallpapers ... especially moving (live) wallpapers, etc...

Are you experiencing any issues with the proximity sensor? I loaded the same version as you last night and this morning my screen wouldn't come back on after a call... I tried a couple of additional calls with the same result. So I immediately backed out and went back to 0.5 because I hadn't experienced any problems with it. That said, I really want the OC functionality...

Well overclocking is really a misnomer as the processor is spec'd at 600 Mhz... I just want my droid to "be all that it can be"!

Running v.6 here with the oc, wifi tethering and brightness hack, and loving it. Not one issue for me, running perfectly. As for the updating yeah it sucks but I just do it while im laying in bed right before i fall asleep, then when i wake up i have all my new goodies to play with...

Oh, I hear ya. If we could truly over-clock to say 750, I'd be a little more inclined to have to have it.

Yup - just got too tiring...if he went to the Sholes delivery or update zips, then maybe I'll dive in again.
Back on Birdman and wondering why I wanted to switch.
Oh I remember, I can't let well-enough alone...

Agreed, if we could use an SPRecovery INSTALL I would be much more inclined to continue trying them.
This is the first smartphone I have ever owned that worked right out of the box. No tweaking or flashing or recoveries required to have a nice well rounded device, and yet here we are, not able to leave well-enough alone. LOL

Are you using a security key? I think it's still broken. Wifi is a standard that should be the same across all platforms. I don't see why connecting with a Mac would be any different than connecting with a PC, an iPod, or even another Droid.

Interesting part is that he's moved a bunch of pre-installed apps to /data and they can be uninstalled via Settings>Applications>Manage Apps.
Includes the usual 2.1 apps, but leaves out several of the more cutting edge hacks/additions (hence his "bugless" title).
Sort of reminds me of the Birdman v4 ROM that I'm running w/a couple of nice additions (2.1 keyboard w/voice input, transparent notification bar)...
I haven't tried it yet - submitter is a newbie to the forum and I'd like to see more results before I give it a go...my paranoid side showing through...

Anyone have a link to this download?
I have looked around and anything I found that links back to this on alldroid has been removed from the forum.

I've only used .4 and .5 of Bugless, as well as Birdman v.4, and I found them to be very similar...I think Birdman app tray is smoother, other functions felt close enough that I wouldn't be able to tell which one I was running...YMMV of course, but that's how they felt to me.
One caveat...It's been a while since I first flashed Birdman's ROM, so I'm not sure what's in the ROM, and what I've added since then...I've been restoring my nandroid of Birdman's ROM, and it contains whatever changes I've made (but not documented!)...i.e., I don't remember.
Grandmaster - do you have a list of what Birdman included in terms of 2.1 apps in V4 out of the box?
It does not come w/any overclocking, tether, brightness stuff, etc.

Is there anything wrong with updating from .5 straight to .8 using the update.zip? Also, doing it this way, is there any reason to do another nandroid backup?
Edit, just figured it out, no problem.

Unfortunately, "great" is a relative term. Don't get me wrong, I'm using .4 and am going to update to .8 tonight. But who knows what the official 2.1 will run like. I'm guessing that it's gonna FLY! I hope I'm not wrong. Time's a great story-teller.

I hope you are right. I haven't been very impressed with any of the cooked 2.1 roms out there.
I'm sure as soon as 2.1 drops, someone will add all the cool stuff from n1 and milestone in a custom rom. I love the multitouch gallery and photo editor.
Either way. "Bugless" is the only rom that I have kept on my phone longer than 6 hours, and that's is because of it's stability.

My favorite (before Bugless) was humancyborg's 2.1. Then there was a Sholes ROM that was OK. But this .4 is the only ROM that runs this Sweeter Home theme of mine with stability.
I d/l'ed .8 ... that's my Saturday night project now that my Sweeter Home theme is done.

It's a sickness...I need counseling or something. Sean Connery was right...never say never again.
So I loaded v.8 via update.zip late last night when my wife wasn't looking ( ) - the option to load w/out any data loss and simplifications he implemented in the ROM sucked me back in.
It is VERY stable and performance is VERY good.
I think v8 is the ROM that will cause me to leave Birdman v4 behind, finally. Bugless V8 looks like the fastest ROM I've used to date. Orientation switches and app loading are very quick, the 2.1 keyboard voice input is the bomb. I added email and 2.1 Gallery back in as I need imap email, and like the 2.1 Gallery. (Still playing w/the included Milestone Gallery, but initially didn't like it as much.)
Anyone waiting on the fences...this is one you should definitely try.
The update.zip option makes this painless to test drive. Do a nandroid backup of your current setup, run the update.zip install for v8 and see if you like it w/out having to reconfigure anything, other than adding email back in (copy a couple of files via ADB) if you need it for IMAP email.
Definitely a keeper for me. I'll still be trying other ROMs for fun, but this will be my day-to-day ROM going forward.
Joe - how'd it go for you?

Loaded it up at 6am this morning - bugless v.8 - although I haven't had any other ROMS to compare with, this is nice so far.
Seems snappier, no force closes - app restores went well - nandroided it once everything was loaded.
Now setting up my icons again
Thanks to Joe Droid for his help with certain issues early on.

Updated to .8.
Hhmmn... My "AdFree" app isn't blocking ads anymore.
That's a bit disconcerting. And it can't seem to update the host file. I've uninstalled and reinstalled ... still nothing. Oh, the joys of "updating".

Joe,
The first time you run AdFree, it'll give you a Java exception error, but just try a couple more times and it should update the hosts file just fine.

I think this is because you have the backup folder too deeply nested. Did you unzip the file into a folder? Because the backup is actually in THAT folder.
Also, it's good practice to adb shell when in recovery and run the following before a backup:
format DATA:
format CACHE:
format SYSTEM:

One comment on Fabulous' good advice - if you're using the update.zip, don't format data unless you want to have to set up all your programs/settings again...the key feature of an update.zip ROM is that you get to keep your programs, settings, and data.
If you're doing a nandroid restore, then formatting data is fine, since it'll get blown away anyway.

if a rom changes only the system stuff and is a nandroid backup couldnt you do an advanced restore and unclick install data so it doesnt overwrite any of your apps?

Yea, I already know about the app's quirks. But this is different. It seems like the hosts file can't be replaced/overwirtten. I can't even force a new hosts file via ADB, Terminal, or Root Explorer. Weird!
I just got home, so I'm going to give it another shot right now. I hope I have better luck than before.

I've noticed something about this rom, I think...I was unable to copy a file to the system directory, until I made some room. Could it be that the lack of rom is also blocking the adfree program?

what back up folder????????? BTW this is my first ROM install.. Just so you know I am rolling on a rooted droid, 2.0.1, SPrecovery 991b (because I cant seem to friggen get 992b to work) and I have a nandroid back up..
I have tried 2 versions of this bugless rom and both say "ERROR:Nandroid exited with status 21"
I have no clue what to do, how do we trouble shoot this?
