A new 2.01+2.1 apps "bugless ROM" (obviously an optimistic dev) in nandroid backup form.

Interesting part is that he's moved a bunch of pre-installed apps to /data and they can be uninstalled via Settings>Applications>Manage Apps.

Includes the usual 2.1 apps, but leaves out several of the more cutting edge hacks/additions (hence his "bugless" title).

Sort of reminds me of the Birdman v4 ROM that I'm running w/a couple of nice additions (2.1 keyboard w/voice input, transparent notification bar)...

I haven't tried it yet - submitter is a newbie to the forum and I'd like to see more results before I give it a go...my paranoid side showing through...

I saw this too and told a few people about it. Should make for a nice fast set up but not necessarily my forte'. I want all the extra bugs on top of my dessert

do i have to revert back to 2.01 if i want to install this? or can i do it on 2.1?

It's a nandroid, so I think you should be able to just do a restore of it over 2.1 and it will replace your boot, data, and system directories...but I've never installed 2.1 (just 2.01+2.1 apps ROMs) so maybe there is some issue here I'm not aware of? Hopefully someone else w/experience w/2.01 over 2.1 will reply. You could probably as the question in the thread at alldroid as well...

In either case, do a nandroid backup of your current setup before making any changes, so you can revert if you want to.

NThanks. I tried it out and it worked fine. And it does seem snappier to me than 2.1

Good to hear...yeah, a lot (all?) of the 2.1 ROMs have issues for many people, me included.

Did you do a nandroid backup of your data directory w/2.1 and then restore it after putting this ROM on, to get your previous apps/settings/accounts back, or did you reinstall/setup all accounts manually?

Also - don't know if you saw it but he has a .2 version w/a couple fixes, one of which is important....

However, I've removed most of the 'features' of the Sholes.info 1.1 ROM, and it's been working fine for me.

Seems to me this is the same thing, albeit missing the 600MHz overclock and Wifi tethering, so I'll pass on this.

Still, I wanna hear some feedback on how it runs. Being faster than 2.1 is no tall order. How about faster than Birdman v4?

I installed ALL of the features except for Launcher (Sweeter Home fan here), and it seems to be quite smooth so far.

I'm in the same boat (minus Sweeter Home). I just reinstalled Sholes 1.1 doing a full data/cache wipe and the ROM seems to be smoking fast... No lagging at all! The only thing I'm not running is launcher2 as it appears to be a memory hog...

I'm running this ROM with Larva Labs Intelligent Home Screen and it is very fast. I like it better than the Shoals.Info ROM which was a little to buggy and laggy for me.

I did a nandroid back up. But I didn't know I could restore my settingshow do I do that?is it as simple as substituting some folders from my original nandroid back up to the new rom folder?

You can boot into sprecovery and start an advanced nandroid backup, choose the nandroid backup you want to use, and then select what you want to restore from the backup (in this case, just /data).

That will restore all your apps/email account setups, data, etc., but it will overwrite the existing data so you'll lose any apps placed there by the provider of the bugfree ROM...he moved a bunch of the Droid standard apps into that folder...

Well, I couldn't resist. I flashed this ROM and it's been very stable so far. IMO, it's a toss up between this and the Sholes.info ROM.

In Sholes, I'd have to kill tasks more often to keep it running smooth, but it made up for it in terms of features (OC + Wifi tether).

This one stays responsive and seems to manage memory better.

So it depends on your needs, I guess. I don't really mind using PDAnet to do a wired tether (which is faster than Wifi tether anyways), so I'm planning to stay with this ROM.

I have to say that I hated all the sholes.info ROM's and never got to try birdman's, but this one is very good. I have been running it since yesterday morning (upgraded to 0.3 a bit later) and it is perfect. I had been content with HC's 2.1 but I finally got the itch to flash something new and since I wasn't impressed with the sholes.info stuff I decided to try this. I really like how you can uninstall any apk you want, the tether stuff doesn't matter to me because I have a MiFi from work so I use that for my Mac Air or HP Envy whenever I am traveling. It has been very speedy and has no lag issues so far, I am also using the Espresso/Sense 2.1 Launcher W/ built in Phone and Browser softkeys (I HIGHLY recommend it, it is in the Theme section for the Droid at alldroid) along with a mash up of xeu's xHero and krazykrivda's Dark/Blue theme's (gotta love metamorph) and it is pure sex.

Way too early to fully assess. It seems snappy enough ... but we'll see how it runs on Sweeter Home with my theme. That will be the true test.

I'm going to try this later today... But for the record, the Sholes ROM has been working extremely well for me with no lagging at all - I've been running it for about 72 hours now. I'm going to make a nandroid of my current, then install .4, and compare the two. Fun stuff!

can someone quickly explain to me how to keep my settings from my previous version (v3)? I dont want to have to go through all the set up again. i know i have to restore my data folder but i dont know exactly how. please be gentle..lol

Though I haven't done it myself ... there are two ways to approach this.

1 - You could install v4 without having it restore the data. In other words, when it gives you the restore options, make sure there isn't an asterisk next to "data".

2 - You could also just do a backup of your current data using the nandroid backup/restore console. Then after installing v4, restore your data from v3.

Either way, first create a complete nandroid backup of v3 with everything. That way you can revert back if something doesn't work quite right.

So far, .4 is proving to be the smoothest, fastest ROM I've tested yet. Sweeter Home hasn't given me one single issue. Everything seems crisp, smooth, and responsive. I'm liking it.

in a previous post someone said that there are downsides to doing it this way. like i may lose some of the things to the creator put in the data file... is that going to be an issue if i restore my previous data?

yeah im really loving version 4. Its sooo smooth and fast. Not one issue.

Also gave my Droid the nice Nexus boot animation and Ooowweeee. Loving this release.

Just installed this to replace a 2.1 ROM I had been using. I liked the 2.1 eye candy, but the ROM was slow and buggy. Too bad I don't remember which one it was...

Waiting for sync to finish, hoping it recovers all of my settings like I've had happen in the past.

I didn't think you could keep the data from 2.1 and install it into 2.0.1. I'm curious to see if it works. I think I tried that once and it just sat there at the bootanimation screen for about two minutes before I pulled the battery,

Pete just told me that this is a very viable installation method. The changes from v3 to v4 are primarily to /system, and the changes to /data are trivial.

So I'm trying this out, and hopefully, it should be all good!

I switched from a 2.1 ROM to a different 2.1 ROM - of course I don't remember which ones I tried. I should take notes.

Anyhow, what happened was after a few minutes of running the new ROM, my apps all re-downloaded, and my settings (background image, haptic feedback preferences, etc) all restored.

This is all tied to my google account.

So, fast forward to today. I restored Bugless 0.4 to my phone, and booted it up. I didn't do a factory reset right away, even though my instincts told me to do that. Instead, I linked my google account using the Accounts tab in settings.

None of my settings came back like I hoped.

Eventually, I decided that I wanted to do factory reset, so I did that. I've just finished going through the setup process now, and I'm hoping that now my stuff will restore. However, I fear that I might have killed my chances by linking the account before doing the factory reset.

I'll post back in a while to confirm.

You should NOT do a factory reset with the bugless ROM, as many of the apps you'll most likely use are moved to the /data partition. That means when you factory reset (wipes DATA: and CACHE: ), you've also deleted all those apps!


EDIT:

As a follow-up to what I posted earlier, you can install v4 and just restore your v3 data. Seems to be working just fine for me, except now I have to run Album Art Grabber again and fill some of these blanks...

It preserved all my apps and settings though, so no complaints!

EDIT EDIT:

And I had to run AdFree again to patch the hosts file. Looks like that didn't get preserved.

Whoops! If I'd bothered to think about it, I would have realized that...

The good news is, my apps all restored from the Market using this technique, which did not happen without the reset. I think it's something about the new phone setup wizard that differs from using the Add Account wizard in the Settings. I can restore the .apk/.odex files from the Bugless backup using adb, so I should be good to go.

So, here's what I noticed:

- Haptic feedback setting is back to what I was using on 2.1
- Apps from the market re-downloaded (27 of them)
- Background picture DID NOT restore

I don't know if my Wi-Fi network config restored itself or not, because my normal access point is offline. (That room is being painted, and everything's turned off and stuffed in the closet.)

Hah, I believe that the SU permissions app was also on the /data partition. That's rough man.

Did y'all notice that Pete posted an update.zip now so you can easily go from .3 to .4. Just run the update from recovery and that's it. nice.

Any ideas as to whether I could use the update.zip over the 2.01 Birdman ROM?

I'd like to try this ROM, but don't want to have to redo apps/settings, accounts, etc...

Make a nandroid backup.

Try it.

If it doesn't work, then just restore.

Yeah...though I looked into the update.zip file and it only appears to include the /system files, so I don't think it would work.

I'm going to bite the bullet and install the full .4 nandroid to ensure I get the full benefit of any improvements it has to offer...

I can use mybackup pro to save some of the things I want to save, and if apps don't reload from market automatically I have backups of them all.

I hope this ROM is worth it - Birdman V4 has been really good to me, so this one is going to need to have some good mojo to replace it in my heart.

One thing I really like about this ROM is its implementation of the minimum brightness hack.

When I put it on my multimedia dock and it goes into dock mode, I can press the lightbulb and it's barely lit. Combine that with 'LEDs Hack (ROOT ONLY)' and I actually have a true alarm clock that won't blind me in the middle of the night.

I have a problem trying too do the nandroid restore, I get the error "Nandroid exited with status 25". any know what this means?

I dont know what status 25 means but make sure you dont have double BDS-20100119-0608 folders.

I only have BDS-20100119-0608 in nandroid folder, I have tried both simple restore and advanced too. same error

Just to be sure we understand each other when I unzip the rar I get a folder called BDS-20100119-0608 and inside that folder is another folder called BDS-20100119-0608 and inside that are the image files, hence double BDS folders. Make sure you have extracted the downloaded rar, that you dont have double folders and that you have the BDS folder placed inside the nandroid folder. Then follow Petes step by step instuctions including wiping before installation.

Yea make sure you unzipped the file and put the folder in the nandroid folder not the entire zip file.
