Noob here...just rooted and trying to install bugless beauty rom. It says to place update.zip file for bugless into root folder to be able to select in recovery. My question is where is the "root" folder? I'm using astro.

Root of the SD card means to put it directly on the sdcard, not in any folder. So you put it in /sdcard/

In SetCPU, Press menu-tap device selection- select autodetect. That SHOULD fix it..although I am not sure how high "Beauty" lets you go.. I know "Beast" goes to 950....

Bugless Beauty is not over clocked out of the box. I think you have to do a custom recovery using nandroid. I haven't done this because it seems too complicated for my comfort level but I believe you download a specific kernal for what clock speed you want (say 1ghz) which are posted over in Taz's section on alldroid. From there you do a nandroid recovery of just boot and not anything else. Then set CPU will give you the more options.
I didn't wanna deal with any of that noise so I just installed Bugless Beast and am cruising at 950mhz no questions asked . I'd suggest just getting the beast.

Hmmmm...I have beautiful widgets as well and it never caused a problem with the native browser... only home++
*sigh*, no smartphone should be released with less than 5 homescreens. Guess I'll be stuck with home++ and its various FC's until 2.1 is pushed out (I'm starting to believe it will never happen).

Questions about sholes.info vs pete's bugless beast
a few days ago i went through the install process of petes and was very happy with the results. The next day sholes.info released there app form of SMUpdate.
My questions:
1. Which one do you like (bugless vs SMUpdate 6)
2. If i were to run the SMUpdate app, would it do all the converting work and uninstall all the bugless mods for me? or do i need to wipe my phone and run SMUpdate from stock?
3. When updates come out, do i just need to download the new SMUpdate and be done with it?
I really like this app form of root as it appeals to people like me who dont have infinite knowledge on the topic, but would like a faster and better droid.

If the update.zip isn't working. Select allow update.zip then select update.zip (depreciated) That works for me when it won't update.
But I suggest you go the nandroid route the first time. I did the update.zip at first and didn't see all that much improvement. Then I decided to wipe my phone and do the nandroid back up to see how to do it and it is way faster and runs better, than when I just did the update.zip for Bugless Beast. When Pete updated the ROM I just used the update.zip from 7.3 to 7.4 but for the first time I suggest doing the nandroid. Yes you'll start from scratch but I feel it's worth it.
On another subject... I just updated my BB to the stock theme because I didn't really like Pete's modified smoked glass theme. (It's great and looks good, just personal preference.) But now that I'm back "stock" I think I want something different. Haha.
On another other subject... Look at all the root posts since this was stickied. See unless you have the banPolice always on patrol it doesn't matter what happens. People will still use the General thread. 99.3% of people either don't care, or don't read instructions. It's sadly just that simple. And who can blame them? It's ridiculous to have one thread to encompass so many different subjects, and questions. Questions and answers get lost in the mix. Everything's all jumbled together. The only real fix is having a sub-forum or banning all mention of "root" "sholes" and "bugless"

How can you tell?
I just rooted, and amrunning BBeast via update.zip. But I haven't noticed any of the changes mentioned in it's list.
But if I were to pick up an android, how could I tell if it were running stock, or BBeuty, BBeast, or sholes or whatever?
I know I'm rootrd b/c Iinstalled Mobile Defense as a system app.

I found an interesting bug while using smoked glass v4.0 last night/this morning. I plugged my phone in to charge and set it down, face down and a couple minutes later I heard raging thunder music. I closed the game and put my phone back making sure not to press any buttons. When I woke up this morning guitar hero was up and running.... strange but not a big deal

Bugless -- I have had very few issues with Launcher too.
I very rarely get a FC, but it just restarts again right after and resumes as normal. I think the phone also sometimes doesn't give it enough time to load all 7 screens. Still, these issues are not only minor but pretty rare too. For the most part it's smooth as hairless kitten.

AWESOME!!!
And if you haven't bought TempMonitor yet, get it NOW!

You need a ROM that supports higher, like tasmanian_droid's or Sholes.info

I run BB7.4 at 950 too. Go to this page: AllDroid - View topic - Droid is stable at 800MHz. Nuff said *950MHz, 1.1GHz added*
There are three kernels, evilboot8, 9 and 1G. There are instructions on how to use them as update.zip files and as nandroid updates. I've used all of them and they ran great on my phone.
There is also a 1.1 nandroid update file. I ran that one for about a day and my phone did fine on it too.

What these guys said
You need to flash a kernel that supports a faster CPU clock speed

Actually, it's the kernel that sits in front of the ROM that supports over-clocking. For instance, the Sholes ROM I'm using only had a kernel that supported 1 GHz o/c. But today, I flashed Tasmanian_droid's new 1.3 GHz kernel. BAM!!! I've got a Sholes ROM moving at 1.3 GHz. (The roof is on fire!)
The cool ROMs are HERE. The fastest kernels are HERE.

Ah interesting. I thought the kernel was part of the ROM itself. Didn't realize you could mix and match.

Wikipedia actually has a pretty good definition. But more importantly is this pic.
Says at least a thousand words, you know?
So we're just flashing a new kernel to the DROID that tells the CPU to run faster.
The ROM is part of the pink part, although the lines do get pretty blurry sometimes.

Aye, I knew they were separate things just didnt know they were mix and match, that pic is pretty good for explaining though for sure. I might have to give taz's kernel a try then.

Can you do the sholes update then the beast update then go back to the sholes then back to the beast and not matter? Or do you have to nandroid everytime you want to try something else? I want to Try Sholes but I don't want to format again.

Is there any all inclusive FAQ for Rooting the Droid anywhere? I see lots of "How-To"s but nothing else. Is there anything one should/must do before one roots one's phone? (for some reason I thought it was important to create a backup or something...but I can't find this anywhere)

question about 2.1 ota update and rooting. i thought i read before that the 2.1 will break root access, but i can't find it now. in the request to keep all rooting inquiries in this thread, i'm asking here.
should i root now, before the update is pushed? i haven't gotten around to doing it yet, but don't want to lose the ability to do so.
ETA: looks like i found the answer in one of the other many 2.1 upgrade threads. Looks like I need to root now before installing 2.1. Is it possible that the 2.1 can "unroot" me? Is that why the app on the market place disables OTA updates? Or is that as long as I'm rooted before the 2.1 update, i should be good for my phone to stay rooted after the update?
I've been pretty busy lately, and all i want to do is make sure I don't miss the boat to root.

I have the exact same question. I know that it will at least be some time before someone will find an exploit to root on that OTA update. I haven't been too interested in rooting, except for one small item: tethering. I don't believe that I would use this enough to pay for it monthly, but it would be nice to have on those few occasions where I need to have internet access for my laptop.

As the other threads state.. 2.1 WILL break root acess until they figure out the exploit again. Just hold out for the devs to mod the new 2.1 and release custom Roms. That way you will keep your root just as you have now, and maybe even get some of the bells and whistles from the nexus 2.1 in our 2.1

I dont know much about the technical side of rooting, but right now I am running petes bugless beast. How do you change themes of it? I am using the standard glass one, but want to test out some other things. OR, is it possible to replace the image files for the widget/notification bar/dock to a custom image? If not, where do you find your themes?

There's a neat little program in the market for switching home programs - Home Switcher.

Is it really that simple?
I am a complete linux/Android N00b but I have been following these forums very closely. A few of us are ready to root and install BB (especially the new 7.5 version). But I'm nervous that my phone will hang up somewhere in the process and I won't know what to do.
Is it really as easy as loading update.zip and installing it to root, and then repeating that process for BB? Does it seamlessly open up a whole new and exciting world, or are there obstacles that I need to be aware of?
Thanks for assuaging my concerns and taking the time to respond.

I have done three updates this week with no issues. Im using BB and all you need to do is go into "droid root helper" (if thats what your using) and then press "reboot recovery"
of course load up "update.zip" onto the root of your sd.
that brings me to a questions.
Under the DL link for the new rom, there is an option for "Patcher 2.0 Lock Screen with Vibrate Tweak (credit to Xeudoxus) [2/7/10]" To load that up do I just reboot that into recovery?

You need to find some of the excellent guides that have been written because there are other things you need to do after you root and before you install a custom rom. I don't know enough to give you a guide and directing you to them may violate this forum's rule (I don't know), because all the one's I know are on a different forum. That doesn't mean they are not available here, it just means that I don't know where they are.

While I am very comfortable with linux, I am completely new to Android. I have been hesitant to update my phone, but I finally took the plunge today as I really wanted to have access to tethering.
My advice is to go to Sholes and download the smupdater. It really makes everything easy. The warnings are a bit disconcerting, but I think they are just making sure that you know that you are on you own. Besides download time the whole process takes maybe 5 minutes. This is a free download, but if you use it and it is worthwhile (it is), a donation would be nice.
I was honestly disappointed with the results at first until I used setcpu and turned up the CPU. Now the phone is super responsive and with onDemand setting, it saves on battery life while the phone is idle.
There are many many people that have rooted and installed a custom rom without any problems, while there have been a few posts talking about "bricked" droids. I think the sholes updater makes it much less likely that something will go wrong along the way.

Sholes is great. It comes with an easy way to unroot, too, if deemed necessary. So there's no need to worry about voiding warranties, and getting "bricked" is very unlikely, as well.
