What speed is everyone running at with the phone being stable?
Just tried to oc to 1.3 ghz, tons of random reboots... so i went down to 1.1 ghz, with the same thing. So I guess I'm stuck at 1ghz for now. Could this be the ROM I am running (smoked glass v4.0) or is 1 ghz just the max for my phone to be stable? How fast are you guys going while staying stable?

I've been at 1.3 since Monday morning. Not one reboot. Before that, I ran at 1.1 for over a week.

Is 950 mhz a lot slower than 1ghz? What rom is the best if I want to try going 1ghz?

Im on BB 7.5 right now that just came out. It upped the speed to 1g instead of 950mhz but im keeping mine at 950 for now, its plenty fast enough for me, Im debating on trying the new taz kernel though with the 1300 that joe is using

It all depends on your processor, 1300 wont work for everyone, it's not so much which ROM is more stable. Every processor is different ever so slightly, and some will be able to handle the 1300, but others wont. Still, 950-1000 is damn good considering stock is 550, heh. Don't push your phones too hard guys. Joe just got lucky with a good processor and not all of ours will be able to do that. If you're getting any sort of reboots, ramp it down a notch or two.

I've been running 1GHz for a couple days with no problems. The governor in SetCPU is set on "ondemand", and I have my lows set to 250MHz, so it's not throttled up all the time. But I never have any FC issues, it's lightening fast, and the batter life has improved due to the ability to throttle down while not in use.

The ROM has little to do with it. It's more luck of the draw. Some processors are fine at 900, some at 1GHz, and some at 1.3GHz. Mine just doesn't seem to care. I bought the TempMonitor app and it's really running no hotter than o/c'ed at 800.
And yes ... it is faaaaaaast!

Yeah, mine went buggy at 1.1, so I'm at 1.0 and it's fast enough for me.

I'm running at 1ghz right now on the bb rom and suprisingly I can tell a difference. Also, I've run a few benchmarks with set cpu and I'm getting the following averages
550: ~435ms
800: ~290ms
950: ~250ms
1000: ~225ms
Again, these are average scores based on approximately 10 benchmark tests(for each speed) at about 1 sec intervals.

Ya, performance can hurt big time in SetCPU, I've seen several people have problems with that setting.

Can't even boot any boot image over the 1Ghz Taz boot image, and running at 950 or 1000 doesn't go well w/my device, so I stick to 800.

I've been running Solid (not a singe FC) for over 24 hr.s at 1.3GHZ using Taz's latest kernel... mostly stock otherwise, no custom rom just standard custom on stock... no 2.1 apps yet... so really only rooted to get ability to load the OC kernel.

hmmm, my max setting is 1ghz. what did you do that allows you to go up to 1.3ghz? Im running mine at 800mhz just cause that speed seems to make the phone snappy enough, didn't notice any difference at 1ghz. I figure I would leave it at the low end to make it last longer.

You have to get Taz's 1.3 kernel to run 1.3. If you're running Pete's Bugless Beast, he only added Taz's kernel that goes up to 1Ghz to his package. So you'd either have to flash Taz's 1.3 kernel separately, or wait for pete to include it or use a different package entirely (maybe sholes has the 1.3?).

I ran the 1 ghz image on no custom rom and I was having an issue with the browser responding.. like it wouldn't even load up a simple Google search. Then later google maps was having issues loading the map while I was navigating. I did a nandroid backup to remove it and I haven't tried any other boot image since. Anyine else have this problem?

I'm running 150 mhz min and 1 ghz max. It works pretty well, and I put a failsafe so that if it goes over 45 degrees C, it'll drop down in temp.

OC may decrease battery life - but you spend less time waiting, and you are out quicker - so it evens itself out.

I wonder if the processors are anything like a normal cpu. I know in a PC you can slowly bump up your OC and over time the cpu will gradually allow faster and faster speeds. You don't just go from stock to insane overnight. I would imagine Joe has been overclocking his for a while now so maybe that is why his is stable?

Good thought. Same processors, same roms, different results...I know that not every processor is EXACTLY the same but there could be validity to what you are saying.
I am running @1GHz and have been for about 2 weeks and it is rock solid. I tried 1.1 with Bugless Beauty 0.8.? a while back and nothing. Today I gave it a whirl again and thought I was good for about 2 hours and then the phone reset itself just flipping through the homescreens.
I also tried it on Sholes 0.2.3 (I think that is the latest one) and had less success. I tried 1.3 for the hell of it on both and just constant reboots.
Good news...is that 800+ is a great improvement from the 550 we were all used to!

I'm running sholes mod, with 1 ghz.. Just tested it all day today.. and the battery lasted from 7 am to well, now, midnight.. its at 5%. Probably less to be honest. I'm super impressed! I did a good amount of usage too! Very stable, no FC or reboots that I saw, definitely staying with 1 ghz!

You guys are nuts running @ 1 - 1.3ghz.... Dont forget processor degradation will most likely set in at those speeds, and very quickly I would assume. It will become unstable.
800mhz - for the speed boost, and minimal stress on the processor, is where I am staying at. Tried it at 950 and didnt see a tangible improvement over 800.

The only reason that we are running them between 1GHz and 1.3GHz is because we don't have the option for 1.5GHz! If I could go above 1.0, I would.
As far as processor degradation goes, I don't see a huge risk there. The OS is stable and temperatures do not go any higher than when using the turn by turn navigation at stock speeds...and that only happens at rare instances.
I was listening to Pandora while the phone was in my jeans pocket and shoveling snow last night for 2 hours (big driveway...lot of snow). I checked the temp when I got inside and it was running at 87 deg F....

Processor degradation only occurs at high temperatures... which I am not seeing at 1.1 GHz. And even if it does degrade the processor quicker, it is not going to do so within the 1-2 years I will have this phone and I have the option of an annual upgrade if I want to use it.

Does anyone know how SetCPU controls clock speed, i.e. what does it alter? I don't have time to research it right now, but, lowering the delivered voltage in order to drop to 250/125 may contribute to processor conditioning. That's how it works to some degree in desktop cpu's.
If conditioning really is the key here, maybe there is some correlation between phone age and clock potential?

If conditioning really is the key here, maybe there is some correlation between phone age and clock potential?

I'm not an expert or anything, but from what I understand, the over (or under)clocking on the Droid does not alter the voltage at all...I'm sure someone with more knowledge can clarify though..

1GHz on BB 0.7.5 has been extremely stable. Only 1 issue since running it (maps froze on me and I had to do a battery pull, then the reboot hung for a few minutes. then all was well again)
950 MHz gave me tons of boot-up issues
800 MHz was more or less the same as 950 stability-wise

did you flash a rom that allow to overclock? if yes did you choose "auto detect" instead of choosing droid/milestone?

Where did you hear about this? This has me interested. Over/underclocking often involves a corresponding change in voltage. I don't imagine that a 1.3 ghz cortex A8 would be stable with the same voltage supplied at 550 mhz.
It seems to me that drawing more current from the battery during high proc load at high clock speed would demand a higher voltage.
I don't think there is an easy way to measure voltage right now, but it would be interesting to see.

Running at 950 now, just switched from 800. Still seems rock solid to me.
As far as the voltage argument is concerned, I can't imagine that the processor would be stable at such a high overclock without changing the voltage at all. Of course, this is solely based on my experience overclocking computer processors, so it could very well be different, but it just doesn't make sense. I'd almost say the voltage has to be increased.

Running Bugless Beauty 0.8.7 (as of today) with Taz's new 1GHz Kernel and it is running well. Everything below 1GHz has been stable as well but I can't get to 1.1 or 1.3...bummer!
Only issue I have seen with the new rom and kernel is that when I pull the phone out of the car dock, all my widgets and icons disappear and do not return without a reboot. That is the only issue I have had.
