Did you mean to your c:android-sdk-windows\platform-tools folder? Because from step 18 on, that's the folder that cmd prompt is working with. I sort of had to figure it out and then just copy/pasted from the tools folder to the platform tools folder, then it worked.

I know exactly where your coming from. I like to goof around with root on the wife's Droid 2. Does the wife actually NEED to be rooted now that 2.2.1 is out? The only reason I rooted my wife's phone was so that she could tether WiFi to her Eee netbook when we go to her family's house (The silly hillbillies don't got no dang WiFi ).

for those whose update fails during the lg update.... reinstalled the androiddriver that was supplied in teh froyo root tools zip.... if you install the lg update software and let it install the android universal driver you will not be able to successfully update to vs740zv6_01

i had this same issue until i reinstalled the proper driver then it took off

also installing su required toggling signature verify to s-off before it would install

Well, I got to vzc, set a ringtone assignment, forgot to install apps before running the update.zip. the ringtone assignment and wallpaper stayed the same after the update, but I still don't know if the update will wipe any apps and games she already has. Anybody have some light to shed on this b4 i do it? Like I said before, the ota didn't install for whatever reason, and i just want to get the vzd on her phone, rooted or not.

Says Problem with communication between cell phone and PC I've installed the drivers from the Froyo root package and to no avail. If someone could point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated...

Also here is the log, I don't know if it will help with my question though

It says specifically: Updating is not possible any longer due to a fatal error while the LG Mobile Phone Software Update.

try installing the drivers that were for that originally. I found that I had to have one set of drivers to install version 6 and another set to install froyo. if you find the thread, GO BACK TO STOCK or something... i think it has the drivers there to install. do that and maybe it'll work. helped me at least.

Going through the update process - so far, so good.

I'm at step 27, trying to force the 3 OTA upgrades. I dial *#*#CHECKIN#*#*, and the status bar says "checkin result - success", but then I get no OTA prompt. I've tried dialing it 3 times now, each time with the "success" message in the status bar, but still can't get the OTA prompt.

Pointers, anyone?

Thanks.

Now that we have rooted 2.2.1, would installing Rom Manager and clockwork mod/recovery be a bad idea?

Alright, I made it through all the steps. It looked like everything was successful (including the su-signed file - I had to turn off signature verification to get it to install). But I apparently don't have root. When I install Titanium Backup, it says I do not have root access.

Is there a separate procedure for getting SU/root access?

Thanks.

I think the step a lot of people overlook (I know I did) is this one:

If you don't do this, fastboot won't work, as the connection doesn't carry over between directories.

SOLVED - Had to install BusyBox in order to get Titanium Backup to get root access. (Busybox must have already been included in the Punisher ROM, which I was using before upgrading to the rooted FroYo).

I made it to step 31. When I send+menu+end to boot into recovery, all I get is the android guy and an exclamation mark. It would seem I have no amonra recovery....it flashed ok in the previous step. Any ideas?

Thanks to the Development Masters..

After a little tweaking I managed to get this working.. The issues I ran into:

1. My computer (Windows Vista, blah blah blah) would not install the android_winusb.inf file that Trident included in the original post.. It saw it, went to install it and then stated a file was not found.. After beating my head against the desk and wall (yes it hurt), I did some searching on the 'net and found another android_winusb.inf zip file from another board.. Installed that one just fine.. I don't know enough about inf files to tell you what wasn't doing what, where.. but oh well..

2. (Last step: Recovery mode and install su_xxxxxxxx.zip) I could not get this file to install.. When I confirmed installation, it gave me an error; something to do with updater script error..? Luckily I saw a post on this forum about toggling signature verfication.. Presto.. Good 2 go..

Thanks again.

same thing happened to me...after you command "fastboot reboot" instead of letting it reboot and unpluging from computer, then powering off and trying to reboot into recovery...go back through the fastboot command of flashing amonra, command fastboot reboot and while its rebooting still connected to your computer, hold send, menu, end. Hope it works...worked for me

Angry

Greetings all!

I am frustrated to the point of near insanity... I followed this guide to the letter, and failed at the command prompt point. So I attempted to retry from the beginning and noticed that the LG updater stopped working.

At that point I decided to start from the beginning... Uninstalling EVERYTHING and began from a clean slate.

Thats when things got hairy... The LG updater now fails to install, it either hangs at 15% or installs around 75% of the way and then closes without making any changes.

I have tried deleting all newly installed files and drivers, registry entries, program information and other tidbits and reinstalling per guide, nothing works!

I AM SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO FRUSTRATED!

I have retried this guide on 3 different computers now, each having the same results...

I have literally spent the last 30 hours of my life trying DESPERATELY to get this to work, but to no avail...

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

At this point, I would strongly recommend that you log on to the IRC and get one-on-one assistance. The guide works, so there has to be something else going on. Click the link that says Chat at the top of this page and follow the prompts to log in. State your problem and be patient. Someone should be able to help there.

Weatherman, I had the same issue. I finally walked away after restarting my phone about 20 times to calm down. As soon as the screen went blank after the LG logo comes up there is a split second before the Android comes up, this is were I hit the Home button and everything went like a dream.

You HAVE to be FAST!

For ppl having driver issues on vista, on device manager find android and click reinstall drivers. Then you should lead it to the folder the drivers you got. Then it will install successfully. There is also a dwnld link in IRC page on top.

It worked for me as well...thanks again and thanks to all that made this possible

Yes you need to follow the guide if you want rooted FroYo. There is presently no other way or 1 click tool to do it.

Default if I alreay have fast boot what step do i start at

i wasn't sure if I had fast boot but I think I do.
i have the widgetsoid widget and hit has a reboot option.
by the way i really like the widget

it has
reboot
hot reboot
reboot to recovery
reboot to fast boot

i did reboot to fast boot
and got a blue screen that says

Code:
fast boot mode started
xxx_start()
i just can't read the xxx my eyes suck

so I think I don not need to downgrade to v6 and then upgrade to vc

I have vc
I have root
I have amen ra

Finally got this working after 3 hours or so. Main problems I had were that I'm running Windows 7 64bit, so I had to download the usb drivers that are available on the ally irc channel (and extract the entire file to the google-usb_driver folder, not just he android_winusb.inf file) and instead of typing "adb reboot-bootloader" I had to type "adb shell reboot bootloader". Not sure, but whatever, it works now!
Thanks to Trident and others who've answered various questions on here!

I think I need to do the following
Remove the install- recovery.sh from the update.zip
Flash the zip with amen ra.
Go back to recovery and flash the superuser

Can these be combined into one zip

In whic case people who like me have rooted roms and recoveries. And fast boot already need one zip.

It seems like the whole process is to get to where I am now?
Rooted vc with amon ra and fastboot

edit....
Did this last night-it's not really that bad. A few snags with the files needing to be renamed, and other little time consuming things, but not bad at all.

agreed, amonra has everything you need for your recovery needs. clockwork doesn't have an ext partition nor ext3 or ext4 (which you'll need if you use Move Apps2SD Enabler (from the market; free) to move the majority of apps using froyo's apps2sd built into application settings). Clockwork sucks.

just my 2cents

this is a great guide for rooting the ally on 2.2.1. i ran into a few bugs which may have been user error but i ran over to irc and a guy over there ended up helping me out. thanks trident and d2a for the method and and write up on this.

this was also my first root... it reminds me alot of hacking psp's when the homebrew community was getting started.. lots of usb cables and mem card swaps.. lol

I don't think this is correct. I believe that froyo uses the normal fat32 partition for app2sd support.

I think the app you are referring to is Move2sd Enabler, it enables apps other than those just approved by the app dev to be moved onto the sd card. By default in froyo an app can only be moved to the sd card if approved for app2sd by the app developer.

I'm not aware that FroYo needs or uses an ext partition. I don't have one and I'm using Move Apps2SD Enabler. Are you certain of that?

No, if there was a "better" way I think everyone would be doing it.
