Default Alpha/beta-testers wanted for species information app

Hi!
Beta-testers wanted for Speciotic, a new web-service with accompanying Android-application to handle species information collected all over the Internet.

The service is in a rather early state, but I would really appreciate to get in touch with potential users that could give feedback and suggestions on how the service can evolve. PM me or reply in this thread!

The app requires Android 2.1 or higher and relies mostly on content from the Speciotic web-service and other Internet sources, so a flat-rate Internet plan or Wi-Fi is recommended.

More info can be found on the web-page and the blog: Speciotic

Kind regards,
Daniel, Sweden

This sounds like an interesting app (I'm a nature nut), I'd love to give it a try!

Great, reinbeau! I haven't packaged the app yet, but as soon as I have, I will PM a link where you can download it. Until then, please browse the web-page and blog, and feel free to give feedback regarding functionality that you would find valuable in this kind of app.

Default First beta-version available

The first beta-version of the Speciotic client for Android is now available. Beta-testers will get a PM with information how to obtain it.

All kinds of feedback is greatly appreciated, most notably hangs, crashes and ideas on how this application could evolve!

My own plans for future functionality include:
  • Recording of species observations : Record observations on the mobile client, download it in suitable formats on the Speciotic web-page.
  • Species key : The possibility to search for species based on their macroskopic features, e.g. colors, sizes, substrate, biotopes etc. Suitable species groups should be fungi, flowers, birds(?), beetles etc. First group to be included will most certainly be fungi, since I have quite a lot of fungi metadata from a previous project.
I think there's a great chance that there are more great ideas out there, I just haven't found them yet. Help me look!

Well, it boots up, preferences works, I've done a few searches, no crashes (no data, either ). What species specifically are you going for here? Plant? Animal? All?

I'm sorry, I should have been clearer about that. It is mentioned on the web-page in rather small text: Currently the only available species group is fungi (~49000 species). This is to be able to run the service on a rather inexpensive server during beta-testing.

I hope this limitation still can provide a feel for what Speciotic will look like when it is fully functional.

And in good time before the service leaves beta state, I will upgrade the server and all major species groups will be available. Well, maybe not bacteria...
