already threads about it.. but yes...

the issue will be getting the apps to work since there is no HOME button

Wasn't there an app for the nook that added soft buttons to the bottom of the screen to act as a home key, etc? I'd imagine that it would end up working on the Fire also.

Soft keys, plus one of the root methods added different ones as well, something with a 'Z' launcher... argh, cant remember now

SoftKeys is the name, it's on the Market and here's the dev thread:

Quick hacked up app to create soft menu/back keys - SoftKeys v3.06 - xda-developers
